Biophysicsdevelopsfastwiththefruitsofmodernphysicsandchemistry.Thereisawiderangeoffascinatingquestionsinunderstandinglifesystems.Duringtheseyears‘studyatTsinghuaUniversity,Iconstantlytriedtoimprovemyselfthroughindependentreading.ThiskeptmewellinformedofthelatestdevelopmentinBiophysicswhichattractsmealot.
E.Schrodinger‘sfamouswork"WhatisLife"letmethinkalotofquestionsinBiophysics.Uptonow,physicisthavemadegreatsuccessinstudyingsimpleperiodiccrystals,butforthecomplexbiologicalstructurespossessbothaperiodicityandordersuchasDNA,therestillexistmanychallenges.Whytheseaperiodicmattercancontrolthelifestrictlyandprecisely?Whyasmallamountofnaturecatalyst-enzymecanbefarmoreefficientthanplentyofman-madecatalysts?Isthegrowthoflifedeterminedbygeneticmaterialsorbyself-assemblyorbybothofthem?Fromthebook"LiquidCrystalsandBiologicalStructures"writtenbyGlennandJerome,Igotdeeperunderstandingofbiologicalstructureswhichpossessbothmobilityandlong-rangestructureorder,respondtoavarietyofexternalstimulijustlikethepropertiesofliquidcrystals.Thestrikingarchitectureatthemolecularlevelshowsthereisacommonphysical-chemicaloriginforalllifesystems.Theorientedmoleculesinliquidcrystalsfurnishanidealmediumforcatalyticaction,particularlyofthecomplextypeneededtoaccountforgrowthandreproduction.Water,especiallytheweakhydrogenbondplayscriticalroleinallorganism.Itdeterminestheproteinfolding,stabilizesthedoublehelixstructureofDNA.Ifwesubstitutedeuteriumforhydrogen,thebiologicalsystemmaybedestroyed.
