VOAFrommyfamilytoyours,I’dliketowishyouahappyThanksgiving.LikemillionsofAmericans,Michelle,Malia,SashaandIwillspendthedayeatinggreatfood,watchingalittlefootball,andreflectingonhowtrulyluckywetrulyare.AsAmericans,eachofushasourownlistofthingsandpeopletobethankfulfor.

Buttherearesomeblessingsweallshare.We’reespeciallygrateful(感激的)forthemenandwomenwhodefendourcountryoverseas.ToalltheservicememberseatingThanksgivingdinnerfarfromyourfamilies:theAmericanpeoplearethinkingofyoutoday.

Andwhenyoucomehome,weintendtomakesurethatweserveyouaswellasyou’reservingAmerica.We’realsogratefulfortheAmericanswhoaretakingtimeoutoftheirholidaytoserveinsoupkitchensandshelters(避難所,防空洞),makingsuretheirneighborshaveahotmealandaplacetostay.Thissenseofmutual(相互的)responsibility–theideathatIammybrother’skeeper;thatIammysister’skeeper–hasalwaysbeenapartofwhatmakesourcountryspecial.Andit’soneofthereasonstheThanksgivingtraditionhasendured.TheveryfirstThanksgivingwasacelebration(慶祝)ofcommunityduringatimeofgreathardship,andwehavefollowedthatexampleeversince.Evenwhenthefateofourunionwasfarfromcertain–duringaCivilWar,twoWorldWars,aGreatDepression–Americansdrewstrengthfromeachother.Theyhadfaiththattomorrowwouldbebetterthantoday.

We’regratefulthattheydid.Aswegatheraroundthetable,wepausetorememberthepilgrims(朝圣者),pioneers(開拓者),andpatriots(愛國者)whohelpedmakethiscountrywhatitis.Theyfacedimpossibleodds,andyetsomehow,theypersevered(堅(jiān)持).Today,it’sourturn.Iknowthatformanyofyou,thisThanksgivingismoredifficultthanmost.Butnomatterhowtoughthingsarerightnow,westillgivethanksforthatmostAmericanofblessings,thechancetodetermineourowndestiny.Theproblemswefacedidn’tdevelopovernight,andwewon’tsolvethemovernight.Butwewillsolvethem.Allittakesisforeachofustodoourpart.

Withallthepartisanship(政黨偏見)andgridlock(僵局)hereinWashington,it’seasytowonderifsuchunity(團(tuán)結(jié))isreallypossible.Butthinkaboutwhat’shappeningatthisverymoment:Americansfromallwalksoflife(各行各業(yè))arecomingtogetherasonepeople,gratefulfortheblessingsoffamily,community,andcountry.Ifwekeepthatspiritalive,ifwesupporteachother,andlookoutforeachother,andrememberthatwe’reallinthistogether,thenIknowthatwetoowillovercomethechallengesofourtime.Sotoday,I’mthankfultoserveasyourPresidentandCommander-and-Chief.I’mthankfulthatmydaughtersgettogrowupinthisgreatcountryofours.AndI’mthankfulforthechancetodomypart,astogether,wemaketomorrowbetterthantoday.Thanks,andhaveawonderfulThanksgiving.BBC

Protesters(抗議者)inNewYorkhaveremainedonthestreetsafterpoliceclearedtheirtwo-month-oldanti-WallStreetprotestcampfromaparkinthefinancialdistrict.Policearrestedabout200protestersaftermovinginearlyonTuesdaytoclearthecamp.Here'sBarbaraPlettinNewYork.

ThelawyersfortheOccupyWallStreetprotestersarechallengingtheeviction(驅(qū)逐).They'vefiled(發(fā)布文件)aninjunction(命令)withthecourt,sayingessentiallythatthemayorandthecityneededacourtorderinordertoevicttheprotestersfromtheparkandtheydidn'tgetone.Andthereisahearingonthisastowhethertheevictionisinfactlegal.Inthemeantime,theprotestersarestillmilling(亂走,工廠,磨)about.It'snotclearwhat'sgoingtohappennext,butdefinitelytheactivistsarearoundinthestreetsofManhattanandvowing(發(fā)誓)tokeepuptheirprotests.ThisistheVOASpecialEnglishHealthReport.Thirtyyearsagothisweek,publichealthofficialsintheUnitedStatesreportedonthefirstcasesofwhatcametobeknownasAIDS.Thereisgrowingprogressagainsttheepidemic(傳染病)ofacquiredimmunodeficiencysyndrome.ButtodayanestimatedsixteenandahalfmillionchildrenhavelostoneorbothparentstoAIDS.Mostofthemliveinsub-SaharanAfrica.MillionsmorelivewithadultswhoaresickfromAIDS.LucieCluverfromOxfordUniversityinEnglandhasstudiedAIDSorphansandchildrenlivingwithsickadultsinSouthAfrica.Shesayschildrencanbedeeplyaffectedbytheirexperiences.LUCIECLUVER:"Andoneofthebiggestimpactsweseeismentalhealth,theirpsychologicalhealth.So,forexample,weseethatAIDSorphaned(成為孤兒的)childrenhaveverymuchhigherlevelsofdepression,anxietyandpost-traumatic(創(chuàng)傷的)stressdisorderthanchildrenwhohavealiveparentorchildrenwhoseparentshavediedofothercauses,includinghomicide(殺人)orsuicide."LucieCluverhasjustwrittenaboutthisprobleminthejournalNature.Shesayschildrenhavetolivewiththestigma(恥辱),thesenseofshameconnectedtoAIDS.Manyarebulliedatschoolorexcludedfromthecommunity.Athome,childrenlivingwithasickadultaremorelikelytoliveinpovertyandfacephysicalandemotionalabuse.Also,LucieCluversaysthechildrenoftenbecomethecaregivers.LUCIECLUVER:"They'remissingschooltogoandgetmedication.They'rewashingthesickperson.They'reoftentakingthemtothetoilet,cleaningtheirwoundsorwashingtheirbedclothes.Sothesekidsfinditverystressfulandupsetting.They'reveryworriedaboutthehealthandfeelresponsibleforthehealthofthesickperson."Closecontactwithsickadultscansometimesspreadtuberculosisorotherdiseases.And,asLucieCluvertoldreporterArtChimes,evenwhenthechildrenareinschool,payingattentioncanbedifficult.LUCIECLUVER:"It'sconstantlyontheirmindsandreallymakingitdifficultforthemtodowellatschool."
