Inrecentyears,touristshavefrequentlybeenseenwalkingaroundandtaking

photosonuniversitycampuses,especiallyinsomefamousuniversities,suchas

BeijingUniversityandQinghuaUniversity.Thisso-called"AcademicTourism^^is

becomingincreasinglypopularandisparticularlyattractivetohighschoolstudents

andtheireagerparents,whobelievethatindoingso,theirchildrenwillbeinspiredto

studyharder.

Therehasbeenmuchheateddiscussioninthemediaonwhetherornotthe

universitiesshouldbeopentotourists.Someholdthatbyopeningtheuniversities

campusfortouring,"AcademicTourism^^willcreateacloserrelationshipbetween

theuniversitiesandthepublic,resultinginasignificantincreaseinthepopularityof

theuniversityitself.Butothers,bycontrast,insistthatcrowdsoftouristswill

inevitablydisturbthelearningenvironmentoncampus.

Inmyopinion,theuniversitiesshouldwelcometouriststotheircampuses.This

"AcademicTourism^willservethegoodofsociety,aswellastheuniversity.Ina

word,itistimewegotridoftheideaofreservinguniversitycampusesforonly

education.

Nowadaysstudentsinsomeuniversitiesareentitledtotheoptiononlecturers

forsomespecificcourses.Thisoffersstudentsamoreflexibleandmoreefficientway

oflearning.

However,thereareseveralfactorsforstudentstoconsiderwhenchoosingtheir

ideallecturers.Ontheonehand,thelecturer'sacademicbackgroundplaysan

Theopenpolicymeansthatourcountryisopentoinvestment,tradeand

technicalandeconomiccooperationwithothercountriesonthebasisofequalityand

mutualbenefit.Thepurposeofopenpolicyistoacquireadvancedtechnology,

Theworldpopulationisrisingsoquicklythattheworldhasbecometoocrowded.We

areusingupournaturalresourcesandatthesametimepollutingourenvironment

withdangerouschemicals.Ifwecontinuetodothis,lifeonearthcannotsurvive.

Concernedpeoplehavemadesomeprogressinenvironmentalprotection.

Governmentsofmanycountrieshaveestablishedlawstoprotecttheair,forestsand

searesourcesandtostopenvironmentalpollution.

Stillmoremeasuresshouldbetakentosolveenvironmentalproblems.

18.Automobiles

Automobiles,asaproductofmoderncivilization,havebeenplayingavitalpart

inthedailyactivitiesofhumansociety.Industryneedsautomobilesforfarmingas

wellastransportation.Everyday,automobilesdrivepeopletoandfromwork.On

weekendsautomobilestakefamiliesforjoyfuloutings.Andduringholidayseasons,

automobilesfillthehighwayseverywhere,eveninremoteareas.Itcouldbesaidthat

thewheelsofautomobilesmovesocietyforward.

Butautomobileshavealsogivenrisetoaseriesofproblems.Forexample,

citiesareovercrowdedwithautomobiles.Theycreatealotofnoiseandtraffic

accidentswhichdisable(傷殘)orkillmanypeopleeachyear.Worstofallperhapsis

theairpollutioncausedbytheexhaustgasesproducedbyautomobiles.Someofthe

Thecomputeriswidelyusedinallfieldsofsociety.Today,whereveryougo,

youwillfindcomputersbeingused.Forexample,computersareusedinuniversities,

largecorporations,andsmalloffices,etc.Ithasevenenteredthehomesofordinary

people.Asitisabletostoreandprocessalargeamountofinformation,thecomputer

bringaboutgreatconvenienceandhighefficiencytopeopleofallwalksoflife.

Computerscanhelppeopleindifferentways.Forexample,computerhelp

scientistsinanalyzingdataanddoingcomplexcalculation.Foranotherexample,
