Preliminaries
Legalbasis
ThisguidelineforEuropeanTechnicalApprovalhasbeenestablishedinfullcompliancewiththeprovisionsoftheCouncilDirective89/106/EC(TheConstructionProductsDirective)andhasbeenestablishedtakingintoaccountthefollowingsteps:
issuingofthefinalmandatebytheEC :18April1996.
adoptionoftheGuidelinebyEOTA(Executivecommission) :2June1998.
endorsementofthedocumentbytheEC SCCopinionof:30June-1July1998.
ECletterof :24September1998.
ThisdocumentispublishedbytheMemberStatesintheirofficiallanguageorlanguagesaccordingtoArt11.3oftheCPD.
StatusofETAGuidelines
AnETAisoneofthetwomaintypesoftechnicalspecificationsinthesenseoftheECConstructionProductsDirective(89/106/EEC).ThatmeansthatMemberStatesshallpresumetheapprovedproductsfitfortheirintendeduse,iethattheyenableworksinwhichtheyareemployedtosatisfytheessentialrequirementsduringaneconomicallyreasonableworkinglife,providedthat:
theworksareproperlydesignedandbuilt
theconformityoftheproductswiththeETAhasbeenproperlyattested.
AnETAGuidelineisabasisforETAs,thatisabasisfortechnicalassessmentofthefitnessforuseforanintendeduse1.
ETAGuidelinesexpressthecommonunderstandingoftheapprovalbodiesoftheprovisionsoftheECConstructionProductsDirectiveandoftheInterpretativeDocumentswithregardtotheproductsandusesconcernedestablishedwithintheframeworkofamandategivenbytheECCommissionafterconsultingtheECStandingCommitteeforConstruction.
ETAGuidelinesarebindingfortheissuingofETAsoftheproductsconcernedforanintendedusewhenacceptedbytheECCommissionafterconsultationwiththeECStandingCommitteeforConstructionandpublishedbytheMemberStatesintheirofficiallanguageorlanguages.
TheapplicabilityandthesatisfactionofanETAGuidelineforaproductanditsintendedusehavetobeassessedinacasebycaseevaluationbyanauthorisedapprovalbody.
SatisfactionoftheprovisionsofanETAGuideline(examinations,testsandevaluations)leadstoapresumptionoffitnessforuseonlythroughthiscasebycaseevaluation.
ProductswhichareoutsideofthescopeofanETAGuidelinemaybeconsideredwhereappropriatethroughtheapprovedprocedurewithoutguidelinesaccordingtoArt.9.2oftheCPD.
TherequirementsinETAGuidelinesaresetoutintermsofobjectivesandofrelevantactionstobetakenintoaccount.ETAGuidelinesspecifyvaluesandcharacteristics,theconformitywithwhichcarriesthepresumptionthattherequirementssetoutaresatisfied,wheneverthestateoftheartpermitstodoso.TheETAGuidelinesmayindicatealternativepossibilitiesforthedemonstrationofthesatisfactionoftherequirements.

Scope
ScopeofGuideline
ThisGuidelinerelatestoStructuralSealantGlazingSystems(SSGS)foruseasfacadesandroofs,orpartsofthem,withglazingatanyanglebetweenverticaland7°abovehorizontal(seeFigures1,3and4).ThisPartoftheGuidelinecoversthegeneralrequirementsforsystemassessmentandthespecificrequirementsforsupported(typesIandII)andunsupported(typesIIIandIV)systems(seeFigure1),wherethestructuralsealadhesionsurfacesareglass,eitheruncoatedorwithaninorganiccoating,andanodisedaluminiumorstainlesssteel.Subsequentpartsofthedocumentwillcoverthespecificrequirementsfortheassessmentoftheuseofglasswithanorganiccoating(opacifier),theuseofaluminiumwithacoatingotherthananodising,andtheuseofthermalbreaksinSSGframingsystems.
SubsequentPartsoftheGuidelinearetobeusedtogether,asnecessary,andwiththisgeneraldocument,asindicated.
StructuralSealantGlazingSystemsinvolvethetechniqueofbondingglazingtoredistributeloadstothefacadestructureviaastructuralsealantandastructuralsealant-supportframe.
Thesystemsarenormallyputonthemarketasa“kit”ofcomponents(refECGuidancepaperC"ThetreatmentofkitsandsystemsundertheConstructionProductsDirective"),givingadesignerthechoiceofcomponentsrequiredforaparticularfacade.
TheETAwillgivedetailsofthecomponentsitcovers,tobeusedinaccordancewiththeETAholder'sdesignrulesandinstallationguide.Typically,thecomponentswillincludesomemanufacturedbytheETAholderandsomebyothermanufacturers.
ThisGuidelinecoverstheaspectsofperformanceofafacadeaffectedbytheincorporationoftheStructuralSealantGlazingSystemasshowninFigure4andallowsfortheoptionspossiblewithinthekit.Thekitcomponentsmayincludethemembersrequiredforthefacadestructure,butthesearenotcoveredbythisGuideline(membersindicatedbydashesinFigure4).Theywillhoweverneedtobetakenintoaccountinrelationtothepre-conditionsgiveninChapter7.
SSGScanbeconstructedinfourdifferentways,whicharedescribedbelowinTable1andshowninFigure1.Devicestoreducedangerintheeventofbondfailuremayberequiredbynationalregulations.

Currentunderstandingnecessitatesanumberofgeneralrestrictions:
thestructuralbondistobesiliconeintheformofalinearbead
thedesignmayincludediscontinuitiesinthestructuralbond,butnoedgemaybeentirelyfree;someedgesmaybemechanicallybeaded
thestructuralsealantistobefactoryapplied.
Induecourse,furtherpartsoftheGuidelinemaybeissuedtoreducetheselimitations.
Itisassumedthatsystemdesignerswillfollownormalgoodpracticeinrelationtosuchmattersasglasssupplycondition(cleanliness,freedomfromdefects,etc)andapplication(useofheat-strengthenedorlaminatedglass,etc,asrequired).ThesemattersarenotcoveredbythisGuidelineastheyareadequatelycoveredbycodesandstandards.However,thereareanumberofimportantrequirementswithadirectbearingonthedesignofSSGsystems.Thefollowinglist,thoughnotexhaustive,setsoutsomeoftheserequirements:
Machiningofglass(forexamplewhererequiredforfittingglazingsafetydevices)mayonlybecarriedoutbyand/orinagreementwiththeglassmanufacturer.
Glassshallbeselectedtoensureitwillsafelytransmitthewindloadtothestructuralsealantsupportframeviathestructuralsealantinaccordancewithnationaldesigncodes.
Structural-sealantadhesiononthreesurfacesisnotpermissible(seeFigure2).Adhesiontoaspacerinaninsulatingglassunitisnottobeconsideredasastructuralbond.
