KeystoSuccessfulTeamwork7Thesetentipsdescribetheenvironmentthatmustoccurwithintheteamforsuccessfulteamworktotakeplace.8Successfulteamworkisthecornerstoneforcreatingafunctioning,contributingteam.9

Theteamunderstandsthegoalsandiscommittedtoattainingthem.Thiscleardirectionandagreementonmissionandpurposeisessentialforeffectiveteamwork.Teammembersmusthaveanoverallmissionthatisagreeduponandthatprovidestheumbrellaforallthattheteamtriestodo.Thisteamclarityisreinforcedwhentheorganizationhasclearexpectationsfortheteam’swork,goals,accountability,andoutcomes.10Theteamcreatesanenvironmentinwhichpeoplearecomfortabletakingreasonablerisksincommunicating,advocatingpositions,andtakingaction.Teammemberstrusteachother.Teammembersarenotpunishedfordisagreeing;disagreementisexpectedandappreciated.11

Communicationisopen,honest,andrespectful.Peoplefeelfreetoexpresstheirthoughts,opinions,andpotentialsolutionstoproblems.Peoplefeelasiftheyareheardoutandlistenedtobyteammemberswhoareattemptingtounderstand.Teammembersaskquestionsforclarityandspendtheirthoughttimelisteningdeeplyratherthanformingrebuttalswhiletheircoworkerisspeaking.12

Teammembershaveastrongsenseofbelongingtothegroup.Theyexperienceadeepcommitmenttothegroup’sdecisionsandactions.Thissenseofbelongingisenhancedandreinforcedwhentheteamspendsthetimetodevelopteamnormsorrelationshipguidelinestogether.13

Teammembersareviewedasuniquepeoplewithirreplaceableexperiences,pointsofview,knowledge,andopinionstocontribute.Afterall,thepurposeofformingateamistotakeadvantageofthedifferences.Otherwise,whywouldanyorganizationapproachprojects,products,orgoalswithateam?Infact,themorethatateamcanbringoutdivergentpointsofview,thatarethoughtfullypresentedandsupportedwithfactsaswellasopinions,thebetter.14

Creativity,innovation,anddifferentviewpointsareexpectedandencouraged.Commentssuchas,“wealreadytriedthatanditdidn’twork”and“whatadumbidea”arenotallowedorsupported.Theteammembersrecognizethatthestrengthinhavingateamisthateverymemberbringsdiversenesstotheefforttosolveaproblem,improveaprocess,reachagoal,orcreatesomethingnewandexciting.15

Theteamisabletoconstantlyexamineitselfandcontinuouslyimproveitsprocesses,practices,andtheinteractionofteammembers.Theteamopenlydiscussesteamnormsandwhatmaybehinderingitsabilitytomoveforwardandprogressinareasofeffort,talent,andstrategy.Theteamholdsreviewmeetingsthatassesstheteam’sprocessandprogressinapproachingandaccomplishingtheteammission.16

Theteamhasagreeduponproceduresfordiagnosing,analyzing,andresolvingteamworkproblemsandconflicts.Theteamdoesnotsupportmemberpersonalityconflictsandclashesnordoteammemberspicksidesinadisagreement.Rather,membersworktowardsthemutualresolutionofproblemsanddisagreements.17

Participativeleadershipispracticedinleadingmeetings,assigningtasks,recordingdecisionsandcommitments,assessingprogress,holdingteammembersaccountable,andprovidingdirectionfortheteam.18
