Pakistan

PakistanisacountryinSouthAsia,locatedatthecrossroadsofCentralAsia,theMiddleEast,andSouthAsia.Itisthesixthmostpopulouscountryintheworld,withanestimatedpopulationofover200millionpeople.Pakistanisafederalparliamentaryrepublicconsistingoffourprovinces,onefederalcapitalterritory,andtwoautonomousregions.Thecountryisadevelopingeconomyandisrankedasthe23rdlargesteconomyintheworldintermsofpurchasingpowerparity.TheofficiallanguageofPakistanisUrdu,butthereareover70otherlanguagesspokeninthecountry.

History

Pakistanhasarichhistorythatdatesbackthousandsofyears.Theregionhasbeenruledbyvariousempires,includingtheMauryanEmpire,theIndo-GreekKingdom,theKushanEmpire,theGuptaEmpire,thePalaEmpire,theDelhiSultanate,theMughalEmpire,andtheBritishEmpire.In1947,PakistangainedindependencefromBritishruleandwascreatedasahomelandforMuslimsintheIndiansubcontinent.

Geography

PakistanislocatedinSouthAsiaandisborderedbyIndiatotheeast,AfghanistanandIrantothewest,Chinatothenorth,andtheArabianSeatothesouth.Thecountryhasadiverselandscape,rangingfromthehighpeaksoftheKarakoramandHimalayanmountainrangestothefertileplainsoftheIndusRivervalley.Theterrainismostlymountainous,withthehighestmountainsbeingK2andNangaParbat,bothover8,000meterstall.TheIndusRiveristhelongestriverinPakistanandplaysacrucialroleinthecountry'sagricultureandeconomy.

Economy

Pakistanisadevelopingcountrywithamixedeconomythatisheavilydependentonagriculture.Thecountryistheworld'sfifth-largestproducerofriceandisamongthetopproducersofcottonandwheat.Pakistanalsohasagrowingindustrialsector,whichincludestextiles,chemicals,andcementproduction.Thecountryisrichinmineralresources,suchasnaturalgas,coal,andironore,butithasstruggledtofullyexploittheseresourcesduetolackofinfrastructureandinvestment.Inrecentyears,Pakistanhasmadestridesindevelopingitsinformationtechnologyandtelecommunicationsindustries.

Culture

Pakistanhasarichanddiverseculturalheritage,influencedbythecountry'shistoryanditslocationatthecrossroadsofvariouscivilizations.ThecultureofPakistanischaracterizedbyitsstrongIslamicinfluenceandthevariousregionalandethnictraditionsthathavedevelopedindifferentpartsofthecountry.MusicanddanceplayanimportantroleinPakistan'sculturalscene,withtraditionaldanceformslikeBhangraandGhoomarstillpopulartoday.

Religion

IslamisthepredominantreligioninPakistan,withover96%ofthepopulationidentifyingasMuslim.ThecountryishometosomeofthemostsignificantsitesinIslamichistory,includingtheBadshahiMosque,theMinar-e-Pakistan,andthetombofthefamousSufisaintShahbazQalandar.OthermajorreligionsinPakistanincludeHinduism,Sikhism,andChristianity.

Politics

Pakistanisafederalparliamentaryrepublicwithapresidentservingastheheadofstateandaprimeministerservingastheheadofgovernment.Thecountryhasamulti-partysystemandisgovernedbyaconstitutionthatwasenactedin1973.Pakistanhashadatumultuouspoliticalhistory,markedbyperiodsofmilitaryruleandpoliticalinstability.Thecountrycontinuestofacesignificantchallengesinareassuchascorruption,sectarianviolence,andterrorism.
