INTRODUCTION

“It’snotwhetherAIisgreaterthanyou.

It’swhetheryouplusAIisgreaterthanyou.”

Student-directedprojects,projectsthataredirectedbystudentsincontentandprocess,canserveaspersonally-meaningfulcontextstodevelopexperienceand?uencywithavarietyofskills,concepts,anddisciplines.Butitcanalsobehardforstudentstode?negoals,?gureoutprojectscopeandtasks,andconcretelymanifesttheircreativevisions.

“Student-directed”doesnotmeanworkingcompletelyautonomously.Infact,

studentsworkingonself-directedprojectsbene?tfromawidevarietyof

scaffoldsandsupports.Inthismoment,generativearti?cialintelligence(GenAI)

isbecomingincreasinglyaccessibleasanewformofsupport.Whenwesay

GenAI,wearereferringtotools—likeOpenAI’sChatGPTorHarvard’scustomAISandbox—thatcangeneratetext,images,orothercontent,inresponsetoa

prompt.

Basedonourownexperiencesasteachersandstudents,wewerecuriousabouthowGenAIcouldserveasaproductivesupportinstudent-directedprojects.Thisguide,whichwasgenerouslysupportedbytheHarvardInitiativeforLearning

andTeaching(HILT),emergedfromourexplorationofthatcuriosity.

ThisguidecontainsadviceandinspirationforhowGenAIcansupportself-directedprojects,supportingstudentsastheynavigatetheuncertaintyandopportunityofworkthatisn’tprescribed,workwhoseoutcomeisn’tguaranteedorknown.We

hopethatthisguidecansupportstudentsandfacultyinexploringhowGenAIcanbeusedinserviceofstudents’goalsanddesires.

Ourprocess

InFall2023,wetaughtthecorerequiredcourseforLearningDesignstudentsattheHarvardGraduateSchoolofEducation(HGSE).Studentsinthecourse

developedaterm-longself-directedprojectfocusedondesigningalearning

experience.Everystudentworkedonaproject—butwhattheyworkedon,andhowtheyworkedonit,wasuptothem.

WiththenewattentiontoGenAI,wewantedtounderstandhowstudentsinthecoursewereusingthesetoolsintheirprojectdevelopment.Wewerealsocuriousabouthowfacultycolleagueswhoteachproject-basedcourseswerethinking

aboutthechallengesandopportunitiesofthisparticulartechnologicalmoment.

Weinterviewed27HGSELearningDesignstudentsand7HGSEfacultymembers.

Beforethestudentinterviews,weaskedeachstudenttoprepareamapoftheir

project-developmentexperience,markingmajormilestonesofthejourneyand

indicatingwhatsupportsandtoolswereimportantalongtheway,includingGenAI.Thisprocessorientationhelpedusunderstandthemanydifferentactivitiesthat

areinvolvedinamulti-monthlearningdesignproject.

Inadditiontoprocessquestions,weaskedstudentstosharetheirbroader

thoughtsaboutstudent-directedprojectsandGenAI.Thefacultyinterviewsweresimilarlystructured,butorientedtowardstheirstudents’workratherthantheir

ownuse.

Ofcourse,theseinterviewsre?ectaparticularmomentintimeandaspeci?csetofstudents.Regardingtheparticularmoment,wehopethatthisdocumentationcanserveasarecordofwhatfeltpossibletopeopleatthebeginningofexpanded

accesstoapowerfulnewtechnology.Regardingtheparticularstudents,we

workedspeci?callywithgraduatestudentsfocusedonlearningdesign.Butevenifyoudon’tworkwithgraduatestudentsorfocusonlearningdesigninyour

teaching,wehopethatideasaboutcreative,student-directeddesignprojectsmaynonethelessigniteyourpedagogicalanddesignimagination.

Adviceandinspiration

Inourconversationswithstudentsandfaculty,weheardlotsofwonderfulgeneraladviceandbeautifulspeci?cexamplesforusingGenAIinstudent-directed

projects.Ouraimwiththisguideistoshareboththebreadthanddepthofwhatwelearned.First,thegeneraladvice:

Considerthebroaderimpacts.Studentsandfacultyemphasizedtheimportanceofthoughtfuluse,identifyinganumberofseriousconcernsassociatedwithusingGenAI,fromitstendencytohallucinate,substantialenvironmentalfootprint,

accessibilitybarriersduetocost,potentialhomogenizationofculture,and

inherentalgorithmicbiases.Theadvicewasclear:approachGenAIwithintentionandawarenessofitslimitationsandpotentialharms.

Preservelearningandauthenticvoice.Anotherrecurringthemewasthevalueof

usingGenAIasasupport,ratherthanareplacement,forpersonalthought,effort,andstyle.Asonestudentexplained,“Ithinkitcanbeasecondbrainforyouif

you’refeelingalittlestuck.Youcanaskittohelpyougetstarted,butitcan’tdoeverythingforyou.You’restillthepilotandit’sjustanassistant.”Students

describedthechallengesofdecidingwhichtaskstodelegatetoGenAIandwhichtotacklethemselves.Asanotherstudentadvised,“Reallythinkofwhatyouwantatthismoment.Doyoujustwanttogetthejobdone,ordoyouwanttolearn?”

Embraceplayandexperimentation.Bothstudentsandfacultyemphasizedthe

importanceofhands-onexplorationacrossdifferentGenAItools.“De?nitelyuseitandexploreit,”onestudentadvised,whilenoting,“Itcan’tdoeverythingforyou.Sobestrategic.”Facultymembersechoedthissentiment,withonestating,“You’vegottoplayaround,getasenseofthings.Youcan’thelpstudentsuntilyou’vegotafeelforityourself.”

Practicestrategiciteration.Studentssharedhowtheylearnedthrough

experiencethatsuccesswithGenAIrequiresmultipleattemptsandprompt

re?nements.Asonestudentobserved,it“won’tgiveyoutherightanswerright

awayafterthe?rsttry,andyouhavetoreviseitalittleuntilyougettheanswer.”However,theyalsocautionedaboutthelearningcurveassociatedwithnewtools,acknowledgingthatsometimesexistingmethodsmightbemoreeffective.Asonestudentwiselyadvised,afterrelatingaparticularlyprotractedexperiencewith

GenAI,“Ifyou’re?ndingthatyou’regoingforsixhours,andmaybeyoushouldhavebeendonebynow,maybeyoushouldstop.”

Thisguidingadviceisaccompaniedbyspeci?cexamplestoinspireuseinaction.

TherestofthisguideoffersacollectionofstrategiesforusingGenAIinstudent-directedprojects.

Thestrategiesarepresentedinasequenceinspiredbytheorderofactivitieswesawandhearddescribedbystudentsintheirmaps.Weheardabouttheearly

experiencesoftheirprojects,developingideasabouttheprojectspaceand

exploringprojectpossibilities.Weheardaboutthelongmessymiddle,creating

prototypesthatserveasconcreterepresentationsofthinking,sharedwithothersaspartofaniterativeprocessofrevisionandre?nement.Thesestrategieswereusedthroughouttheprocess.
