theNIH'sNationalInstituteofNeurologicalDisordersandStroke(NINDS),usedahighlysensitivescanning
techniquetorecordthebrainwavesof33healthy,right-handedvolunteersastheylearnedtotypeafive-digittest
codewiththeirlefthands.Thesubjectssatinachairandunderthescanner'slong,cone-shapedcap.Anexperiment
beganwhenasubjectwasshownthecode“41234"onascreenandaskedtotypeitoutasmanytimesaspossible
for10secondsandthentakea10secondbreak.Subjectswereaskedtorepeatthiscycleofalternating(交替的)
practiceandrestsessionsatotalof35times.
Duringthefirstfewtrials,thespeedatwhichsubjectscorrectlytypedthecodeimproveddramaticallyand
thenleveledoffaroundthe11thcycle.Inapreviousstudy,Dr.Cohen'steamshowedthatmostofthesegains

Amajorfactorinthegraduatestudents'transformation,Wiemanconcluded,wastheirexperienceofintense

anecdotestooneanother.In2019,astudypublishedintheProceedingsoftheNationalAcademyofSciences
backedthisidea.Trackingtheintellectualadvancementofseveralhundredgraduatestudentsinthesciencesover
