Warming up by talking about Standard English What is the Standard English?2. Reading and underliningNow lets go on with STANDARD ENGLISH AND DIALECT. Please turn to Page 13. Read the passage quickly and underline all the useful words and expressions in it. Copy them to your notebook after class as homework.Words and expressions from STANDARD ENGLISH AND DIALECT (II)standard English, Believe it or not, in the way, play a (adj.) part , recognize . as . expression, Midwestern, African, Spanish, eastern, southeastern, northwestern, especiallyStandard EnglishMany people think the English spoken on TV and the radio is standard English.3. Reading and translatingNext you are going to read the text STANDARD ENGLISH AND DIALECT and translate it into Chinese.4. Speaking EnglishRead the passage again and find the answers to the questions:1) What is the Standard English? (Many people think the English spoken on TV and the radio is Standard English.)2) What is the dialect? (When people use words and expressions different from the “standard English”, it is called a dialect.)3) Why are there many dialects in America?(There are many immigrants in America. Besides, geography also plays a great role in making dialects.) 5. ListeningLets turn to page 14 and do the listening text. Before listening to the tape, please read the words fast, and then tick the words you hear on the tape. After that Ill play the tape for the second time and then finish the chart. You should look through the chart and find out the listening points.
