4、night, the great opera "Faust" was playing. When it ended, everyone shouted and clapped happily for the new singer, Christine Daae. Christine could hardly believe that she had done so well. For the first time, she had sung the most famous part in Faust, the part of Margarita. Usually Chris

5、tine only sang small parts in the operas, as she was young and inexperienced. But then the actress who usually played Margarita became ill suddenly, so young Christine had to take her place. Christine did a beautiful job as Margarita and the audience loved her. Many people said that she sang like a

6、beautiful bird.2 Christine's amazing talent surprised the people. They had never really listened to her sing before. They asked themselves why she had only been given small parts in the operas. "Such a wonderful singer deserves to always sing in the lead parts!" they said to one anothe

7、r. The singers in Faust and the opera workers did not know why Christine suddenly sang so beautifully. No one remembered Christine finding a new singing teacher. One actress said, laughing, "Why, she sang terribly just six months ago!" Even though the opera was over the people stayed and t

8、alked about the performance. Meanwhile, a young man ran towards Christine's dressing room. His name was Raoul, and he was a rich gentleman who people knew as the "Vi-comte de Chagny" . He had seen Christine fall down with exhaustion at the opera's end, and he was very worried about

9、 her.4 He ran to her room to see her. A crowd of people was standing around her bed talking. Raoul told the doctor that Christine should have some fresh air and rest, so the doctor immediately told the excited people to go. Only himself, Raoul, and Christine's maid were left in the room. Raoul w

10、as relieved when Christine woke up and smiled at him. He knelt down by her bed and whispered, "Christine, I must speak to you alone. It's very important." "I'm sorry, Raoul," she said softly, "I'm very tired now. We can speak later." "Yes, please leave,

11、 sir," said the doctor. " I'll watch over Miss Daae and make sure she rests." "Thank you, Doctor. I'm not ill, but I would like to rest alone for a while, please," Christine said. Raoul thought to himself that her voice sounded strange.6 Raoul was so anxious to speak

12、 with Christine that he waited quietly outside her door. He thought that she might come outside to say a final goodbye to the old owners of the opera. These men were named Messieurs Debienne and Poligny, and they were arriving tonight for a special reason. They were going to sell the opera house to

13、two other men, Messieurs Richard and Monte harmin. But Christine never left her room, unfortunately for Raoul. But as he stood in the hall by her door he heard voices coming from her room. One voice was Christine's, but the other belonged to a man! Who was inside with her? Raoul stood close to t

14、he door to hear their conversation. " Ah, Christine, you must love me you must love me," the man's deep voice said. 'I gave you my soul tonight. I sang only for you!" Christine answered in a voice full of emotion and love.8 "Then, Christine, you have given me a gift great

15、er than jewels or riches the gift of your voice and your trust in me. I thank you," said the deep voice. Raoul stood still. His heart was pounding. It was in that moment that Raoul realized that he loved Christine, and he had always loved her. Hearing Christine's emotional words to the unkn

16、own man filled Raoul with pain and jealousy. He needed to find out who this man was that Christine seemed to care for so much. No one said anything more, but Raoul remained by Christine's door, hoping to discover the man's name. Suddenly, the door opened. Christine came out of the room, brea

17、thing quickly. A veil was hiding her face why? She looked straight ahead of her, and was in such a hurry to leave that she never saw Raoul standing in the shadows. Raoul saw that she did not lock her door.10 When Christine disappeared around the corner, Raoul opened the door and jumped into the room

18、. He looked around wildly for the unknown man. He cried out, "Show yourself, sir! I know you are here. I wish to have words with you 1 will not let you leave this room!" He lit a candle and searched the room. There was no one there, and Raoul could find no signs that anyone had been there,

19、 except Christine. But he had heard the man's voice, full of love and pain. "I must find that man," he thought to himself.12 CHAPTER TWO: The Letters from the PhantomMeanwhile, in another part of town the opera's old owners, Debienne and Poligny, were having dinner with the new own

20、ers, Richard and Montchannin.After they had eaten and drank much of the restaurant's fine wine, the owners told Richard and Montcharmin that they had one last thing to tell them about the opera house. It must be told before the men became the opera house's new owners. Poligny took out a piec

21、e of paper from his coat pocket. It was a note, written in a beautiful handwriting with red ink. The note said that the owners of the Paris Opera House must give someone calling himself " the Phantom of the Opera" 20,000 francs every month. Also, this "Phantom" asked that opera b

22、ox number 5 be left open. It seemed that the Phantom enjoyed14watching the operas from that place! "What is this nonsense'!" the new owners said, laughing. Debienne and Poligny looked serious. "My friends, you should take this seriously. We do not know the truth about the Phantom

23、of the Opera, but we know he is real. Believe me; he will be very angry if he is not obeyed. lie has done things to us before," said Debienne. Richard and Montcharmin were reasonable men. They certainly did not believe in ghosts or " phantoms" . And 20,000 francs was a lot of money. T

24、hey were not going to give that much money to some ridiculous man, who was probably crazy anyway. They believed that the old owners were playing a very complicated joke on them. They decided to ignore the note. Soon they had forgotten all about the ridiculous "Phantom" . One afternoon, aft

25、er a large and delicious lunch at a nearby restaurant, Richard entered his16office. He hail sat down at his desk and was thinking about taking a short rest when he saw a note lying on the table. It was written in the same beautiful writing, with red ink as the first note.Monsieur Richard, I am sorry

26、 to disturb you at this time. Certainly I understand that you must be very busy learning to manage this fine Opera House. For myself, I am sorry to hove missed several of your wonderful operas. It is unfortunate that people continue to buy Box Number 5, when I have asked for it. Debienne and Poligny

27、 have written to me. They tell me they have warned you about my little requests. At the moment, it seems that you have decided not to pay attention. Since I am sure that you have only forgotten, I will ask you once again: do not sell Box Number 5, or you will suffer the results.The Phantom of the Op

28、era18 Richard was thinking about this strange letter when Montcharmin entered the room, very upset. He had the very same letter in his hand. Richard and Montcharmin spoke together for some time. They were beginning to think that this joke of Debienne and Poligny's was becoming very irritating. W

29、hy were they bothering the new owners with stupid ghost stories? Richard and Montcharmin decided that perhaps the old owners simply missed their theater, and wanted to have some fun. Montcharmin said that for the Opera House's future shows, they should give Opera Box 5 to the old managers. Certa

30、inly this would make the ridiculous old men feel better! The next day the managers received a letter from Debienne and Poligny. It thanked Richard and Montcharmin for kindly offering them Opera Box 5. But Debienne and Poligny would not dare to take that Box away from the terrible Phantom! Who knew w

31、hat would happen?20 That same day they received a letter from the Phantom. It thanked them for leaving Opera Box 5 open. "I had a very wonderful evening," the letter continued, "but please do not forget to give me 20,000 francs every month! I shall be waiting for it." Richard and

32、 Montcharmin were rather angry. They still believed that the old owners were playing a trick on them, and they did not have time for any more jokes. They decided to ignore the Phantom of the Opera's letters if they came. For the next weeks Opera Box 5 was sold as usual. However, the unfortunate

33、person who bought the Box did not get to enjoy the opera. Whenever anyone tried to enter the box, they would hear a strange, cold voice. It said, "I am sorry, Monsieur or Madame, but this Box is already taken. Kindly find another seat." The person saw no one in the box, and they did not kn

34、ow where the voice was coming from.22 Then the frightened person would jump out of the box and look into il, wondering. Each time they did this, the box would be empty. They would tell themselves that they had only imagined the voice. So, they would bravely step back into the box, but they would run

35、 away frightened when the terrible voice spoke to them again! "Oh, no! The Phantom of the Opera has come to haunt us!" this person would say. And, of course, the others only laughed at the poor customer because they did not believe in ghosts. After this experience the people who bought Box

36、 5 would ask for their money back. Poor Richard and Montcharmin were very angry, because people's stories about Box 5 and the Phantom of the Opera were ruining their business! They were tired of hearing things about the ridiculous Phantom. They thought that if " the Phantom" was not th

37、e old managers playing tricks, then he was someone else maybe a24young man who did not like opera! Eventually, Richard and Montcharmin decided that they would watch one perfonnance inside Box 5. They were determined to solve the mystery.26CHAPTER THREE: Christine and the Angel of MusicIn the weeks a

38、fter Christine's amazing night as Margarita in Faust, she hardly sang at all. Richard and Montcharmin, who did not know about her wonderful voice, gave her only the smallest parts in the operas. Still, she was so busy that it was very difficult for Raoul to find her. Raoul wanted and needed to s

39、ee Christine. He wrote her kind and anxious letters, asking if she was well and happy, and if he could see her. But Christine never answered these letters. When Raoul went to her dressing room she was never there. Raoul did not give up. Finally one day tie received a letter from Christine. In the le

40、tter Christine said that she was traveling to the town of Perros, where she had28grown up. Her father was buried there, and she wanted to put flowers on his grave. She asked if Raoul would come with her. Raoul was happy and relieved, but also nervous. Finally he had heard from Christine, and soon he

41、 could see her and tell her about his love for her. What would she say? And what about the mysterious man she had spoken with that night? Raoul had known Christine Daae for many years. They had both spent their youth in Perros. When he was a boy, Raoul had studied the violin with Christine's kin

42、d father. Sometimes, after the lessons, Father Daae would tell stories to the children. He told wonderful, exciting tales of fairies, ghosts and angels, and all the things they did. Raoul and Christine both loved to listen to these stories. Christine's favorite stories were always the ones about

43、 the Angel of Music. Christine's family30loved music and each person could sing or play an instrument. Father Daae often told them, "My child, only the best musicians will hear the Angel of Music speak to them. They cannot see the Angel, but his voice will fill their ears with beautiful mus

44、ic when they are sad or in trouble. He will guide them and teach them always." "Have you ever heard the Angel of Music, father?" Christine asked. "No," Father Daae said softly, "hut you will hear him, Christine! When I die and go to Heaven, I will send him to comfort yo

45、u!" As Christine grew into a young woman, her voice became very beautiful. The people in the town said that she would certainly become a famous singer some day. Father Daae was extremely proud of his young and innocent daughter. He wanted Christine to sing with all her might, so that people wou

46、ld know how good she was.32 Every day for many years Christine practiced her singing. She believed one day that the Angel of Music would visit her. Christine and her father continued to live in Perros during these years. However, Raoul moved to Paris to live with his large and wealthy family. Raoul

47、became very handsome and had gotten a good education. Christine had grown into a beautiful young woman. One day, Raoul returned to Perros to visit his old violin teacher. When Raoul entered Father Daae's home, the first thing he saw was Christine bringing her father a cup of tea. He looked at he

48、r and his heart pounded. He suddenly felt nervous, as he did not remember Christine being so beautiful! She looked up at her guest and cried out in a sweet voice, "Why, Father, it's Raoul. He's returned to see us!" That evening, Raoul and Christine sat in the garden looking at the

49、shining moon. They34shared their memories of growing up together, and talked about Christine's music studies. They tried not to think about the powerful feelings they had for each other. As the night turned into early morning, Raoul took Christine's hand and kissed it. "Christine, I wil

50、l think of you always," he said. AB he left, Raoul told himself ibat he was rich and educated, and the son of a royal count. He could never marry a poor singer like Christine. His family would be too angry. After Raoul left, Christine continued to study music and care for her father. She promis

51、ed herself never to think about Raoul. Sadly, Father Daae could not live forever. Christine loved her father, and she felt that he was her ouly friend in the world, besides Raoul. When he died, her love for music and singing died with him. Fortunately, Christine's voice was good enough for her t

52、o a music school nearby.36Christine did not do very well at this school, but she did not do poorly, either. Finally, she completed her studies there and began to sing at the Paris Opera House. She only sang in the chorus, or in very small roles. All these memories, both sad and happy, passed through

53、 Raoul's mind on the train to Per-ros. Finally the train arrived at the town. Raoul found Christine in the town's graveyard, looking at the place where Father Daae was buried. Raoul stood still and watched her. In the moonlight her face was pale, sad, and frightened. It hurt Raoul to see her

54、 looking that way. He walked over to where she stood, and when he reached the grave, he said a prayer for Father Daae's soul. When he finished, he turned to Christine and said, " Dear "Christine, I must ask you something. Do you remember the night I came to your dressing room after you

55、r performance in38Faust? You asked rae to leave you. but I must tell you, I did not go. I stayed by the door and listened in secret. I heard you speaking with a man, and. and I heard him ask for your love." Raoul wanted to say more, and ask if she loved this man also, but he was afraid to hear

56、what she would say. Christine's eyes were very wide. Her mouth trembled. For a moment, Raoul thought she was going to throw herself into his arms. But then she seemed to control her emotions. She said, " Raoul, I have something deeply important to tell you. Do you remember my Father telling

57、 us stories about the Angel of Music?" "Of course," Raoul said. "The Angel of Music only comes to the best musicians. Oh, Christine, we were so happy then ." " Raoul," Christine interrupted him, " I have been visited by the Angel. I hear him speaking to me in

58、my dressing room."40 Raoul stared at her. He did not know what to say. He remembered perfectly the sound of the man speaking to Christine. The voice certainly sounded like an ordinary voice. Was she trying to tell him that the voice was the Angel of Music speaking? What was happening? " Th

" Christine, there is no Angel of Music. You know that," he said kindly. "I think someone is trying to trick you."42 Christine's eyes grew cold and her face became like stone. Without another word,
