高中英語原版小說整書閱讀指導(dǎo)WONDERPartOneOrdinaryIknowI'mnotanordinaryten-year-oldkid.Imean,sure,Idoordinarythings.Ieaticecream.Iridemybike.Iplayball.IhaveanXBox.Stufflikethatmakesmeordinary.Iguess.AndIfeelordinary.Inside.ButIknowordinarykidsdon'tmakeotherordinarykidsrunawayscreaminginplaygrounds.Iknowordinarykidsdon'tgetstaredatwherevertheygo.IfIfoundamagiclampandIcouldhaveonewish,IwouldwishthatIhadanormalfacethatnooneevernoticedatall.IwouldwishthatIcouldwalkdownthestreetwithoutpeopleseeingmeandthendoingthatlook-awaything.Here'swhatlthink:theonlyreasonI'mnotordinaryisthatnooneelseseesmethatway.ButI'mkindofusedtohowIlookbynow.IknowhowtopretendIdon'tseethefacespeoplemake.We'veallgottenprettygoodatthatsortofthingme,MomandDad,Via.ActuallyItakethatback:Via'snotsogoodatit.ShecangetreallyannoyedwhenpeopledosomethingrudeLike,forinstance,onetimeintheplaygroundsomeolderkidsmadesomenoises.Idon'tevenknowwhatthenoiseswereexactlybecauseIdidn'thearthemmyself,butViaheardandshejuststartedyellingatthekids.That'sthewaysheis.I'mnotthatway.Viadoesn'tseemeasordinary.Shesaysshedoes,butifIwereordinary,shewouldn'tfeellikesheneedstoprotectmeasmuch.AndMomandDaddon'tseemeasordinary,either.Theyseemeasextraordinary.IthinktheonlypersonintheworldwhorealizeshowordinaryIamisme.MynameisAugust,bytheway.won'tdescribewhatIlooklike.Whateveryou'rethinking,it'sprobablyworse.WhyIDidn'tGotoSchoolNextweekIstartfifthgrade.SinceI'veneverbeentoarealschoolbefore,IamprettymuchtotallyandcompletelypetrifiedPeoplethinkIhaven'tgonetoschoolbecauseofthewayIlookbutit'snotthat.It'sbecauseofallthesurgeriesI'vehad.TwentysevensinceIwasborn.ThebiggeroneshappenedbeforeIwasevenfouryearsold,soIdon'trememberthose.ButI'vehadtwoorthreesurgerieseveryyearsincethen(somebig,somesmall),andbecauseI'mlittleformyage,andIhavesomeothermedicalmysteriesthatdoctorsneverreallyfiguredout,Iusedtogetsickalot.That'swhymyparentsdecideditwasbetterifIdidn'tgotoschool.I'mmuchstrongernow,though.ThelastsurgeryIhadwaseightmonthsago,andIprobablywon'thavetohaveanymoreforanothercoupleofyears.Momhomeschoolsme.Sheusedtobeachildren's-bookillustrator.Shedrawsreallygreatfairiesandmermaids.Herboystuffisn'tsohot,though.SheoncetriedtodrawmeaDarthVader,butitendeduplookinglikesomeweirdmushroomshapedrobot.Ihaven'tseenherdrawanythinginalongtime.Ithinkshe'stoobusytakingcareofmeandVia.Ican'tsayIalwayswantedtogotoschoolbecausethatwouldn'tbeexactlytrue.WhatIwantedwastogotoschool,butonlyifIcouldbelikeeveryotherkidgoingtoschool.Havelotsoffriendsandhangoutafterschoolandstufflikethat.Ihaveafewreallygoodfriendsnow.Christopherismybestfriend,followedbyZacharyandAlex.We'veknowneachothersincewewerebabies.Andsincethey'vealwaysknownmethewayIam,they'reusedtome.Whenwewerelittle,weusedtohaveplaydatesallthetime,butthenChristophermovedtoBridgeportinConnecticut.That'smorethananhourawayfromwhereIliveinNorthRiverHeights,whichisatthetoptipofManhattan.AndZacharyandAlexstartedgoingtoschool.It'sthoughfunny:evenChristopher'stheonewhomovedfaraway,IstillseehimmorethanIseeZacharyandAlex.Theyhaveallthesenewfriendsnow.Ifwebumpintoeachotheronthestreet,they'restillnicetome,though.Theyalwayssayhello.Ihaveotherfriends,too,butnotasgoodasChristopherandZackandAlexwere.ForinstanceZackandAlexalwaysinvitedmetotheirbirthdaypartieswhenwewerelittle,butJoelandEamonnandGabeneverdidEmmainvitedmeonce,butIhaven'tseenherinalongtime.And,ofcourse,IalwaysgotoChristopher'sbirthday.MaybeI'mmakingtoobigadealaboutbirthdayparties.HowICametoLifeIlikewhenMomtellsthisstorybecauseitmakesmelaughsomuch.It'snotfunnyinthewayajokeisfunny,butwhenMomtellsit,ViaandIjuststartcrackingup.SowhenIwasinmymom'sstomach,noonehadanyidea!wouldcomeoutlookingthewayIlook.MomhadhadViafouryearsbefore,andthathadbeensucha“walkinthepark”(Mom'sexpression)thattherewasnoreasontorunanyspecialtests.AbouttwomonthsbeforeIwasborn,thedoctorsrealizedtherewassomethingwrongwithmyface,buttheydidn'tthinkitwasgoingtobebad.TheytoldMomandDadIhadacleftpalateandsomeotherstuffgoingon.Theycalledit“smallanomalies.ThereweretwonursesinthedeliveryroomthenightIwasborn.Onewasveryniceandsweet.Theotherone,MomsaiddidnotseematallniceorsweetShehadverybigarmsand(herecomesthefunnypart),shekeptfarting.Like,she'dbringMomsomeicechips,andthenfart.She'dcheckMom'sbloodpres-sure,andfart.Momsaysitwasunbelievablebecausethenurseneverevensaidexcuseme!Meanwhile,Mom'sregulardoctorwasn'tondutythatnight,soMomgotstuckwiththiscrankykiddoctorsheandDadnicknamedDoogieaftersomeoldTVshoworsomething(theydidn'tactuallycallhimthattohisface)ButMomsaysthateventhougheveryoneintheroomwaskindofgrumpy,Dadkeptmakingherlaughallnightlong.WhenIcameoutofMom'sstomach,shesaidthewholeroomgotveryquiet.Momdidn'tevengetachancetolookatmebecausethenicenurseimmediatelyrushedmeoutoftheroomDadwasinsuchahurrytofollowherthathedroppedthevideocamera,whichbrokeintoamillionpieces.AndthenMomgotveryupsetandtriedtogetoutofbedtoseewheretheyweregoing,butthefartingnurseputherverybigarmsonMomtokeepherdowninthebed.TheypracticallyfightingwerebecauseMomwashystericalandthefartingnursewasyellingathertostay
