Thesecondthingistheimportanceofeducation.Ithinkforallourcountriestoday,thethingthatwecandomostistobuildtheknowledgeandcapabilityofourpeople.Ineveryoneofoursocieties,atthemoment,therearepeopleoftalentandability.Butunlesstheygettheeducationopportunitiesthattheyneed,theywillneverbeabletofulfillthatopportunityproperly.Iwouldliketothinkinyearstocome,thattherewouldbepartnerships,forexample,betweentheuniversitiesandscientificinstitutesinacountryliketheUK.Andhowyoudevelopyouruniversitysectorandsciencehere?IthinkforEurope,thereismuchmuchmorethatwecando,totrytomakesurethatEuropeandChinaworkmorecloselytogetherindevelopingtheknowledge

Thethirdthingisthat,Ithink,weneedtopayattentiontoscientificandtechnologicaldevelopment.Andweneedtomakesurethatwearealwaystryingtogettothenextphaseofinnovationanddevelopment.IfoundinmylifejustoverthetenyearsthatIwasprimeministeroftheUnitedKingdomthatthepaceandscopeandthescaleofchangewassofastandthescientificdevelopmentalteringsoquicklythatgovernmentsandcompaniesandpeopleconstantlyhavetoupgradetheirskills,havetoretrain,havetofindthenewfrontiersofknowledgeandexplorethem.AndIthinktoday,morethananythingelse,itwouldbeeducationthatisthekeytothesuccessorfailureofourcountriesandoureconomies.//

Andfinally,whatweneedtodoistopayattention,aswedevelopoureconomy,totheenvironment.Thisisaconcernnoweverywhereintheworld.Howdowemakesurethatthedevelopmentthatwehaveissustainable,thatitisresponsible,thatitpaysattentiontotheneedsoftheenvironment,totheneedstocurbpollution,andprovidebetterqualityoflifeforourpeople,atthesametimemustgivethemthegrowthandthejobsandprosperitythattheyneed.Sothesequestionsarerightattheheartofhowsuccessfulcountriesdeveloptoday:thepartnershipbetweenpublicandprivatesector,theeducationandknowledgeeconomyofthefuture,thedevelopmentofscienceandtechnology,andensuringthataswedevelop,wepayattentiontotheenvironmentaroundus.Ithinkthesewouldbethebigquestionsthatdominateeconomicdevelopmentherebutalsorightaroundtheworld.

OneotherthingIthinkthatisimportant:wecanlearnalotfromeachother.It’struethatinyoureconomicdevelopment,youcanlearnfromEurope,andcountriesliketheUK,thatwecanalsolearnfromsomeoftheextraordinarydevelopmentsthatareoccurringhere.20yearsago,IwenttoGuangzhouandvisitedthatforthefirsttime.AndIsuspect20yearsago,thiswasaveryverydifferentcityhere.Inthatperiodoftime,therehasbeenvirtuallyarevolutionintermsofthechangeandtransformationtothewonderfulplacethatwehaveheretoday.Andthatcameaboutbecausepeoplehadtheleadershipandthevisionandtheforesighttomakethechangesnecessarytobringitabout.AndifIhadanysinglelessonfrommytimeasleaderofmypoliticalpartybutalsoasprimeministerofmycountryisthis:changeisthemostdifficultthingtodo,butintoday’sworld,themostnecessary.Andthemorewearepreparedtoopenup,themorewearepreparedtolearnfromeachother,themorewearepreparedtoembracetheworldofglobalizationandunderstanditsimpact,thenthebetterwewillbeatdealingwithitsconsequences.
