First,contributorstoacommunalonlineencyclopediaoftenlackacademiccredentials,therebymakingtheircontributionspartiallyinformedatbestanddownrightinaccurateinmanycases.Traditionalencyclopediasarewrittenbytrainedexpertswhoadheretostandardsofacademicrigorthatnonspecialistscannotreallyachieve.

Second,eveniftheoriginalentryintheonlineencyclopediaiscorrect,thecommunalnatureoftheseonlineencyclopediasgivesunscrupuloususersandvandalsorhackerstheopportunitytofabricate,delete,andcorruptinformationintheencyclopedia.Oncechangeshavebeenmadetotheoriginaltext,anunsuspectingusercannottelltheentryhasbeentamperedwith.Noneofthisispossiblewithatraditionalencyclopedia.
