Architectureistheartandscienceofdesigningbuildingsandstructures.A

buildingreflectsthescientificandtechnologicalachievementsoftheage

aswellastheideasandaspirationsofthedesignerandclient.The

Theuseofanarchitecturalstylecannotbesaidtostartorfinishona

specificdate.Neitherisitpossibletosayexactlywhatcharacterisesa

particularmovement.Buttheoriginsofwhatisnowgenerallyknownas

modernarchitecturecanbetracedbacktothesocialandtechnological

changesofthe18thand19thcenturies.

Insteadofusingtimber,stoneandtraditionalbuildingtechniques,

architectsbegantoexplorewaysofcreatingbuildingsbyusingthelatest

technologyandmaterialssuchassteel,glassandconcretestrengthened

steelbars,knownasreinforcedconcrete.Technologicaladvancesalso

helpedbringaboutthedeclineofruralindustriesandanincreaseinurban

populationsaspeoplemovedtothetownstoworkinthenewfactories.

Suchrapidanduncontrolledgrowthhelpedtoturnpartsofcitiesinto

slums.

Bythe1920sarchitectsthroughoutEuropewerereactingagainstthe

conditionscreatedbyindustrialisation.Anewstyleofarchitecture

emergedtoreflectmoreidealisticnotionsforthefuture.Itwasmade

possiblebynewmaterialsandconstructiontechniquesandwasknownas

Modernism.

Bythe1930smanybuildingsemergingfromthismovementwere

designedintheInternationalStyle.Thiswaslargelycharacterisedbythe

bolduseofnewmaterialsandsimple,geometricforms,oftenwithwhite

wallssupportedbystilt-likepillars.Thesewerestrippedofunnecessary

decorationthatwoulddetractfromtheirprimarypurpose—tobeusedor

livedin.

WaterGropius,CharlesJeanneret(betterknownasLeCorbusier)and

LudwigMiesvanderRohewereamongthemostinfluentialofthemany

architectswhocontributedtothedevelopmentofModernisminthefirst

halfofthecentury.Buttheeconomicdepressionofthe1930sandthe

secondworldwar(1939-45)preventedtheirideasfrombeingwidely

realizeduntiltheeconomicconditionsimprovedandwartorncitieshadto

berebuilt.Bythe1950s,theInternationalStylehaddevelopedintoa

universalapproachtobuilding,whichstandardizedtheappearanceofnew

buildingsincitiesacrosstheworld.

Unfortunately,thisModernistinterestingeometricsimplicityandfunction

becameexploitedforprofit.Therediscoveryofquick-and-easy-to-handle

reinforcedconcreteandanimprovedabilitytoprefabricatebuilding

sectionsmeantthatbuilderscouldmeetthebudgetsofcommissioning

authoritiesandhandleareneweddemandfordevelopmentquicklyand

cheaply.Butthisledtomanybadlydesignedbuildings,whichdiscredited

theoriginalaimsofModernism.

InfluencedbyLeCorbusier'sideasontownplanning,everylargeBritish

citybuiltmulti-storeyhousingestatesinthe1960s.Mass-produced,

low-costhigh-risesseemedtoofferasolutiontotheproblemofhousinga

growinginner-citypopulation.Butfarfrommeetinghumanneeds,the

newestatesoftenprovedtobewindsweptdesertslackingessentialsocial

facilitiesandservices.Manyofthesebuildingswerepoorlydesignedand

constructedandhavesincebeendemolished.

Bythe1970s,anewrespectfortheplaceofbuildingswithintheexisting

towenscapearose.Preservinghistoricbuildingsorkeepingonlytheir

facades(orfronts)grewcommon.Architectsalsobegantomakemore

useofbuildingstylesandmaterialsthatweretraditionaltothearea.The

architecturalstyleusuallyreferredtoasHigh-Techwasalsoemerging.It

celebratedscientificandengineeringachievementsbyopenlyparading

thesophisticatedtechniquesusedinconstruction.Suchbuildingsare

commonlymadeofmetalandglass;examplesareStanstedairportand

theLloyd'sbuildinginLondon.

DisillusionmentatthefailureofmanyofthepoorimitationsofModernist

architectureledtointerestinvariousstylesandideasfromthepastand

present.Bythe1980stheco-existenceofdifferentstylesofarchitecture

inthesamebuildingbecameknownasPost-Modern.Otherarchitects

lookedbacktotheclassicaltradition.Thetrendinarchitecturenow

favourssmallerscalebuildingdesignthatreflectsagrowingpublic

awarenessofenvironmentalissuessuchasenergyefficiency.Likethe

Modernists,peopletodayrecognizethatawelldesignedenvironment
