Title:AnEmpiricalStudyonEnglishCommunicationWillingnessofNon-EnglishMajorCollegeStudents

Introduction

English,asoneofthemostwidelyspokenlanguagesintheworld,hasbecomeasignificanttoolforcommunicationglobally.ItisanessentialsubjectinmostuniversitiesinChinaandplaysacrucialroleinsocialandeconomicdevelopment.However,despitetheimportanceofEnglish,researchshowsthattheEnglishproficiencylevelofcollegestudentsinChinaisrelativelylow,particularlyfornon-Englishmajorcollegestudents.

Englishcommunicationwillingnessreferstotheextenttowhichnon-EnglishmajorcollegestudentsarewillingtoengageinEnglishcommunicationactivities.ApositiveattitudetowardsEnglishcommunicationisessentialforeffectiveEnglishlearninganduse.Therefore,thisstudyaimstoexplorethefactorsthataffecttheEnglishcommunicationwillingnessofnon-EnglishmajorcollegestudentsandtoproviderecommendationsforeducatorstoenhanceEnglishcommunicationamongthisgroupofstudents.

Methodology

Thisstudyusedamixed-methodapproachthatincludedbothqualitativeandquantitativemethods.Atotalof325non-EnglishmajorcollegestudentsfromtwouniversitiesinChinaparticipated.Theparticipantscompletedasurveythatincludedquestionsontheirbackgroundinformation,Englishproficiencylevel,andcommunicativewillingness.ThesurveyemployedaLikertscale(1-5)tomeasurethestudents'Englishcommunicationwillingness,where1represents"stronglydisagree"and5represents"stronglyagree."

Inadditiontothesurvey,twelveparticipantswereselectedtoparticipateinsemi-structuredinterviews.Theinterviewquestionswerefocusedonexploringtheparticipants'attitudestowardsEnglishcommunication,theirexperiencesofEnglishconversation,andthefactorsthatinfluencedtheirwillingnesstoengageinEnglishcommunication.Theinterviewsweretranscribedandanalyzedfollowingthethematicanalysisapproach.

Results

TheresultsofthestudyindicatedthattheEnglishcommunicationwillingnessofnon-Englishmajorcollegestudentswasmoderate,withameanscoreof3.47.ThestudentsperceivedEnglishcommunicationasessential,butthemajoritydidnotfeelconfidentintheirabilitytocommunicateinEnglishduetotheirlowEnglishproficiencylevel.Peerpressureandsocialnormswereidentifiedasdominantfactorsthatinfluencedthestudents'willingnesstoengageinEnglishcommunication.

Thethematicanalysisoftheinterviewdatarevealedthattheparticipants'attitudestowardsEnglishcommunicationvariedsignificantly.SomeparticipantshadapositiveattitudetowardsEnglishcommunicationandregardeditasameansofimprovingtheirEnglishproficiencyandincreasingtheirculturalknowledge.Incontrast,otherparticipantshadanegativeattitudetowardsEnglishcommunicationandfeltanxiousorembarrassedwhenspeakingEnglish.

Theparticipants'experiencesofEnglishconversationhadasignificantimpactontheirwillingnesstocommunicateinEnglish.ThosewhohadpositiveexperiencesofEnglishconversationweremorewillingtoengageinEnglishcommunicationthanthosewhohadnegativeexperiences.TheparticipantsalsoidentifiedthelackofopportunitiesforEnglishcommunication,fearofmakingmistakes,andlackofmotivationassignificantbarrierstotheirEnglishcommunicationwillingness.

Conclusion

Thestudydemonstratedthatnon-Englishmajorcollegestudents'Englishcommunicationwillingnessisaffectedbymultiplefactors,includingEnglishproficiencylevel,attitudestowardsEnglishcommunication,experiencesofEnglishconversation,andenvironmentalfactors.EducatorsneedtoencouragestudentstodevelopapositiveattitudetowardsEnglishcommunicationandcreateasupportiveenvironmentthatpromotesEnglishcommunication.Theyshouldalsoenhancestudents'EnglishproficiencylevelbyadoptingeffectiveteachingmethodsandprovidingampleopportunitiesforEnglishcommunication.Additionally,peersupportandsocialnormscanbeleveragedtoenhancetheEnglishcommunicationwillingnessofnon-Englishmajorcollegestudents.

Limitations

Thestudyhadsomelimitations.First,thesamplesizewasrelativelysmallandwaslimitedtotwouniversitiesinChina,whichlimitsthegeneralizationofthefindings.Second,thestudycollecteddatausingself-reportedmeasures,whichmaybeaffectedbysocialdesirabilitybias.Finally,thestudyfocusedonlyonthefactorsthatinfluencetheEnglishcommunicationwillingnessofnon-Englishmajorcollegestudents,andotherfactorsthatmaycontributetoEnglishlearning,suchasmotivation,werenotexploredin-depth.

FutureResearch

Futureresearchshouldaddressthelimitationsofthisstudyandcollectdatafromamorerepresentativesampleofnon-Englishmajorcollegestudents.Itshouldalsoadopttriangulationmethodstoenhancethevalidityandreliabilityofthefindings.Additionally,futurestudiesshouldexploretheeffectivenessofdifferentinterve
