ThereisalsoamuchsmallersecondlocationatTheCloistersinUpperManhattanthatfeaturesmedievalart.TheMetropolitanMuseumofArt4RepresentedinthepermanentcollectionareworksofartfromclassicalantiquityandAncientEgypt,paintingsandsculpturesfromnearlyalltheEuropeanmasters,andanextensivecollectionofAmericanandmodernart.TheMetalsomaintainsextensiveholdingsofAfrican,Asian,Oceanic,Byzantine,andIslamicart.Themuseumisalsohometoencyclopediccollectionsofmusicalinstruments,costumesandaccessories,andantiqueweaponsandarmorfromaroundtheworld.Severalnotableinteriors,rangingfromfirst-centuryRomethroughmodernAmericandesign,arepermanentlyinstalledintheMet'sgalleries.Representedinthepermanentc5HistoryHistory6ThemuseumfirstopenedonFebruary20,1872,housedinabuildinglocatedat681FifthAvenueinNewYorkCity.JohnTaylorJohnston,arailroadexecutivewhosepersonalartcollectionseededthemuseum,servedasitsfirstpresident.Openingreceptioninthepicturegalleryat681FifthAvenue,February20,1872.

ThemuseumfirstopenedonFeb7Between1879and1895,theMuseumcreatedandoperatedaseriesofeducationalprograms,knownastheMetropolitanMuseumofArtSchools,intendedtoprovidevocationaltrainingandclassesonfinearts.Themuseumcelebratedits75thanniversarywithavarietyofprograms,initiatives,andeventsin1946,culminatingintheanniversaryoftheopeningofitsfirstexhibitiononFebruary22,1947.Theanniversaryfestivitiesincludedspeeches,exhibitions,cross-promotionswithfilmsandplays,andrelateddisplaysinFifthAvenuestorewindows.Between1879and1895,theMus8Themuseumin1914
