5G:thegrowingmonetisation

imperative

As5Gadoptiongrows,themonetisationimperativewillescalate.A‘wow’factorisrequiredtoattractnewcustomersorincentiviseexistingonestowardshigherspend.Extendedreality(XR)isastrongcandidatehere,havingthepotentialtousherinanewageofimmersiveconsumerexperiencesthatbenefitfrom5G’sadvancedcapabilitiesaroundspeed,latencyandcapacity.5Gfixedwirelessaccess(FWA)servicesprovideafurtherincrementalrevenueopportunity,particularlyinmarketswithlowfixedbroadbandpenetrationorwherethefixedbroadbandtechnologymixskewstowardsxDSL.Whiletheconsumersegmentrepresentsthelargestcontributortooperatorrevenues,enterpriseisthemaingrowthdriverasoperatorstargetthedigitaltransformationofindustries.5Gstandalone(SA)andprivate5Gnetworkswillbepivotaltoenterprise5Gmonetisation.

TheriseofgenerativeAI

MobileoperatorshaveutilisedAIforawhilenowtovaryingdegrees.However,theemergenceofgenerativeAIhaspushedtheenvelopeon

AIcapabilitiesandthrustAItechnologyintoboardroomconversationsglobally.OperatorswilluseadvancedAImodels,suchasChatGPT,beyondnetworkfunctionstodeliverasmarterandmorepersonalisedcustomerexperience.DevelopmentsinAIwillalsohaveprofoundeffectsonothersectorsoftheeconomy.Initialusecaseshavepertainedtocontentdevelopment,butafurtherwaveoftoolswillcontextualisetheuseoflargelanguagemodelsforspecificindustriesandapplications.However,ethicalconcernsaroundthetechnologystillneedtobeaddressed.AIregulationwillthereforecontinuetomoveupthepolicyagendaasgovernmentsdevelopframeworksforregulatingtheuseofnewAItools.

Theshifttocircularitygathers

momentum

Theconceptofcircularityhasrisentothetopoftheagendaforpolicymakersandindustryplayersinlightofgrowingconcernsaroundthegenerationofe-wasteandunsustainablelevelsofconsumptionofnaturalresources.Althoughthetechnicallifespanofamobiledeviceisnowbetweenfourandsevenyears,theaverageuseperiodofmobiledevices

isonlyaroundthreeyears.Governmentsandindustryplayershavearoletoplayinincentivisingconsumers,suchasbybuildingnewchannelsandsupplierstocollect,refurbishandreselldevicesandimplementingawarenesscampaignsonsustainability.OperatorsandotherecosystemplayersinAsiaPacificarealreadytakingaleadinthisregard,withinitiativestodrivecircularityinmobilephonesandotherdigitaldevices.

Consolidationdrivesscaleand

efficiency

ThewaveoftelcoconsolidationinAsiaPacifichascontinuedinto2023,withtheannouncementthatDialogAxiataandBhartiAirtelplantomergetheiroperationsinSriLanka.Drivingthistrendistheneedtorampupinvestmentstofuel5Grollout,improvenetworkperformanceforcustomersandachieveefficiencygainsamidgrowingcompetitionandnarrowingmargins,asevidencedbytheinitialoutcomesfromsomerecentdeals.Inthe5Gera,scalehasbecomeincreasinglyimportantforoperatorsastheylooktomusterthecapitalexpenditurerequiredforextensivenetworkdeployment,distributeandmonetisenew5Gservices.Forpolicymakers,adoptinganevidence-basedapproachtoassessingconsolidationdealsiscrucialtoachievingthebestoutcomesforconsumersandindustryplayers.

Mobileisfuellingfintech

Regionally,AsiaPacifichasoneofthefastest-growingfintechindustries,includingmassivematuremarketssuchasIndiaandemergingonessuchasVietnamandIndonesia.Thecontinuedgrowthinthefintechsector,especiallysincetheCovid-19pandemic,hasimprovedtheleveloffinancialinclusionintheregion,resultinginanincreaseinmobilemoneyaccounts,pointofsaleterminalsandB2Bsales,amongothers.Operatorshavebeenpartneringwithecosystemplayerstodiversifyproductsandofferoptionssuchas‘buynow,paylater'.Atthesametime,investorsinAsiaPacifichavecontinuedtheirfocusonfintechtoimproveaccesstoavarietyoffinancialproductsforbothindividualsandsmallbusinesses–suchasmicrolending,SMElendingandB2Bpayments.Wealthmanagementgearedatlower-wealthsegmentshasalsogainedsomeattention.

Tomaximisethepotentialforgrowthandinnovationintheregion,policymakerscantakeactiontorebalancethedigitalecosystemandcreatefairerbusinessconditionsformobileoperators.Suchmovescanensurethatoperatorsinvestinresourcestobuildoutremaining4Ginfrastructure,aswellas5Gnetworks,atscaleandpace.Itcanalsoensuretheintroductionofnewnetworkservicesthatwillenablethedigitaleconomyinthecomingdecades.

Inpractice,thismeansputtinginplacetherightincentivestopromotethelong-termgrowthofthevaluechain,implementinganoptimaltaxframeworktofosterthedevelopmentofthedigitaleconomy,reducingtheregulatorycompliance

burdenonoperators,takingstepstoclosethedigitaldivide(includingforwomenandothervulnerablepopulations),andprotectingcitizensandbusinessesonline.

Meanwhile,theITU’sWorldRadiocommunicationConference2023(WRC-23)willtakeplacefrom20Novemberto15December2023inDubai.WRC-

23willofferanopportunitytobuildaspectrumroadmapgoinginto2030,addressthedigitaldivideandensure5Gcanbenefitbillionsofpeoplearoundtheworld.Thechancetoexpandtheavailabilityofaffordable5Gservicesiscrucial,assuchservices,alongwithregulatorypolicysupport,willhelpensurefuturegrowthandinnovation.

TherehasbeensteadygrowthinuniquemobilesubscribersinAsiaPacific.Overthenextsevenyears,nearly400millionnewsubscribersareexpectedtobeadded.SouthAsiaaccountsforaroundtwothirdsoftotalmobilesubscribersinAsiaPacific,andthemajorityofnewsubscribersovertheperiodto2030willalsocomefromthesub-region.

MobilepenetrationinAsiaPacificwillreach70%by2030,comparedtotheglobalaverageof73%bythesameyear.ThepenetrationrateishighestinNortheastAsiaandOceaniaat82%and79%,respectively.

AlmosthalfofthepopulationinAsiaPacificisconnectedtothemobileinternet.Themobileinternetusagegapintheregionhasnarrowedsignificantlyfrom60%in2017to47%in2022,reflectingtheincreasingaffordabilityofdevicesandimprovingdigitalskills.Additionally,morepeoplenowrelyontheinternetformanydailyactivities,whichhasbeenpartlydrivenbytheCovid-19pandemic.

ThemobileinternetlandscapeinAsiaPacificisdiverse:maturemarketssuchasAustralia,SouthKoreaandNewZealandhaveadoptionlevelsofover80%,whilebarrierscontinuetoimpactaccessandusageinothermarkets.Theseincludepoordigitalskills(especiallyamongolderpopulations),lackofaffordabilityofdevicesandservices,andonlinesafetyconcerns.

5GisgainingmomentumacrossAsiaPacific,drivenbyacombinationoffactors,includingrapidnetworkexpansioninmanymarkets(suchasIndia),thefallinaveragesellingpriceof5Gdevicesandoperators’marketingefforts.Fromnowto2030,5Gadoptionwillrisenearlysixfoldto41%.

Despitethegrowthof5Ginmaturemarkets,4Gwillremainthedominanttechnologyataregionallevelfortheforeseeablefuture,accountingformorethanhalfoftotalconnectionsby2030.Meanwhile,legacynetworks(2Gand3G)areontheirwaytobeingphasedout.Operatorsinseveralcountries,includingAustralia,JapanandthePhilippines,haverecentlyannouncedplanstoshutdownlegacynetworksinthecomingyears.

Thefirstwaveof5GgrowthwasdominatedbypioneermarketsinNorthAmerica,WesternEurope,NortheastAsiaandtheGulf.Bytheendof2023,5GadoptionwillhavehitthemassmarketinAustralia(42%),Japan(47%)andSouthKorea(53%),puttingthemonparwithglobalpeerssuchasChina(45%),Germany(35%)andtheUS(59%).

Thesecondwaveisnowunderwayandisbeingdrivenbytherolloutof5Gnetworksinlargeemergingmarkets,suchasIndia.Although5G’sshareofmobileconnectionswillremainhigherinfirst-wavemarketsby2030,second-wavemarketswillrecordamuchhighernumberofnew5Gconnections,takingtheglobaltotalto5billionby2030.

LicensedcellularIoTconnectionswillmorethandoubleby2030

Therewillbemorethan280millioncellularIoTconnectionsinAsiaPacificby2030.India,JapanandSouthKoreawillaccountfornearlythreequartersoftheseconnections.TherewillbeaboosttoIoTapplicationsas5Gnetworksexpandacrosstheregionbecause5GenablesnewIoTusecasesbasedonitslow-latencyandhigh-capacitycapabilities.

IoTwillbecrucialtotherealisationofthedigitaltransformationambitionsofcountriesacrossAsiaPacific,asitwillenableawiderangeofinitiativessuchassmartmanufacturing,smartcities,energy-efficientconstructionandlow-impactindustrialisation.
