9Uncertainty
NOTEAcalculationoftheprobableerroraccordingtothisclauseisnotalwaysnecessary.
Duetotheverynatureofphysicalmeasurementsitisimpossibletomeasureaphysicalquantitywithouterroror,infact,todeterminethetrueerrorofanyparticularmeasurement.However,iftheconditionsofthemeasurementaresufficientlywellknown,itispossibletoestimateorcalculateacharacteristicdeviationofthemeasuredvaluefromthetruevalue,suchthatitcanbeassertedwithacertaindegreeofconfidencethatthetrueerrorislessthanthesaiddeviation.Thevalueofsuchdeviation(normally95%confidencelimit)constitutesacriterionoftheaccuracyoftheparticularmeasurement.
Itisassumedthatallsystematicerrorsthatmayoccurinthemeasurementoftheindividualquantitiesmeasuredandofthecharacteristicsofthegascanbecompensatedforbycorrections.Afurtherassumptionisthattheconfidencelimitsinerrorsinreadingandintegrationerrorsmaybenegligibleifthenumberofreadingsissufficient:the(small)systematicerrorsthatcouldoccurarecoveredbytheinaccuracyofmeasurements.
