Thissoundsencouraging.However,theFedisconsideringthe

ideajustwhensomeothercentralbanksarebeginningto

questionwhetherstrictinflationtargetingreallyworks.

Atpresentcentralbanksfocusalmostexclusivelyon

consumer-priceindices.OnthismeasureMr.Greenspancanboast

thatinflationremainsundercontrol.Butsomecentralbankers

nowarguethatthepricesofassets,suchashousesandshares,

shouldalsosomehowbetakenintoaccount.Abroadpriceindex

forAmericawhichincludeshousepricesiscurrentlyrunning

allthefourbiggestEuropeanUnioncountries,TonyBlairin

Britain,JacquesChiracinFrance,GerhardSchroderinGermany

andSilvioBerlusconiinItaly,wereeachgivenabloodynose

bytheirvoters.
