ThestateroundsoftheTelstraBusinessWomen'sAwards,heldinJuneandJuly,providesnapshotsofthesuccessesof,andchallengesto,womeninbusiness.Thestatewinnersareadiversegroup:ahorsetrainer,afoodindustrymanagingdirector,theheadofasuperannuationfund,apsychiatrist,acoffeeretailer,achildren'sclothingdesigner,thechiefexecutiveoftheFederalGovernment'sAustralianSportsDrugAgencyandafarmer.Allaresuccessstories,buttheirattitudestobusiness-andwomeninbusiness-areasdiverseastheindustriesinwhichtheywork.

WhenAustralianscienceisdeployedwiththesupportofveryscarcedomesticventurecapital,itoftenendsupintrouble.Whenoursciencelinkstointernationalventurecapital,wetendnottosecureapartnershipthatallowsustocapturethebenefitanddevelopcommercialisationcompetencies.
Giventheattitudesofscientistsandpublic-sectorsciencemanagers,thisshortcomingisnosurprise.AnendemicculturalantipathyexistsbetweenAustralianpublic-sectorandacademicscientistsandtheworldofbusiness.WhilethisisnotexclusivetoAustralia,itseemstobeparticularlystronghere.Therearesomeexceptions,butasageneralphenomenonitisdifficulttooverstatetheproblem.
