GraduationProject:TheImpactofSocialMediaonTheMentalHealthofYoungAdults

Introduction:

Inrecentyears,socialmediahasbecomeanintegralpartofthedailylivesofyoungadults.Researchhasshownthatyoungadultsspendanaverageof2.5hoursperdayonsocialmediaplatforms.Whilesocialmediahasbroughtpeopleclosertogetherandprovidedanarrayofopportunities,therearealsonegativeeffectsassociatedwithexcessiveuseofsocialmedia.Therehasbeenasignificantincreaseinmentalhealthdisorderssuchasanxiety,depression,andaddictionamongyoungadults.Therefore,thisstudyaimstoinvestigatetheimpactofsocialmediaonthementalhealthofyoungadults.

LiteratureReview:

Impactofsocialmediaonmentalhealth:

Socialmediacanhaveadetrimentaleffectonaperson’smentalhealth.Socialmediaaddictioncancauseanxiety,depression,andothermentalhealthproblems.Moreover,excessivesocialmediausecanimpactsleepquality,self-esteem,andmood.Youngadultswhospendmoretimeonsocialmediaaremorepronetosocialcomparisonandfeelingsofinadequacy.Studieshaveshownthatsocialmediauserswhocomparethemselvestoothersaremorelikelytoexperiencedepressionandanxiety.

Socialmediaaddiction:

Socialmediaaddictionisdefinedasthecompulsiveuseofsocialmediathatleadstonegativeconsequencessuchasneglectofdailyactivitiesandrelationships,reducedproductivity,anddecreasedmentalhealth.Socialmediaaddictionisontheriseamongyoungadults.Researchhasshownthatitcanleadtonegativemood,socialisolation,andaddictiontoothersubstancessuchasdrugsandalcohol.Moreover,itcanleadtodisorderssuchasdepressionandanxiety.

Factorscontributingtosocialmediaaddiction:

Severalfactorscancontributetosocialmediaaddiction.Firstly,theintrinsicqualitiesofsocialmediaplatformssuchasnotificationsandlikescancreateastateofrewardwhenuserschecktheirprofiles.Secondly,theneedforsocialapprovalandthefearofmissingoutcandriveyoungadultstospendmoretimeonsocialmedia.Thirdly,theanonymityandprivacythatsocialmediaofferscancreateasenseofsecuritythatallowsyoungadultstoexpressthemselveswithoutfearofjudgmentorscrutiny.

Methodology:

Theresearchwilluseaquantitativeapproachtoanalyzetheimpactofsocialmediaonthementalhealthofyoungadults.Asampleof100youngadultsbetweentheagesof18to24willbeselectedforthestudy.Thesamplewillconsistofequalrepresentationofmalesandfemales.Datawillbecollectedthroughasurveyquestionnairecontainingquestionsonsocialmediause,mentalhealthstatus,andthefactorscontributingtosocialmediaaddiction.ThequestionnairewillbedistributedonlineviasocialmediaplatformssuchasFacebookandInstagram.

Results:

Thedatawillbeanalyzedusingdescriptiveandinferentialstatisticstoassesstheprevalenceofsocialmediaaddictionanditsimpactonmentalhealth.Theresultswillbepresentedusingtables,graphs,andcharts.Thestudywillalsoexaminethefactorscontributingtosocialmediaaddictionandtherelationshipbetweensocialmediauseandmentalhealth.

Conclusion:

Thestudywillprovideinsightsintotheimpactofsocialmediaonthementalhealthofyoungadults.Thefindingswillcontributetotheliteratureonsocialmediaaddictionandmentalhealth.Moreover,thestudywillproviderecommendationsonhowyoungadultscanmanagetheirsocialmedi
