gotoworkinMilwaukee,Wisconsin.Itwasastrictanddifficult

lifeforOprah.Butitalsoledthewayforherfuture.Shewasa

highlyintelligentchild.Bytheageofthree,shehadlearnedto

readandwrite.Shealsomadeherfirstpublicappearanceatthat

Threepassions

Threepassions,simplebutoverwhelminglystrong,havegoverned

mylife:thelongingforlove,thesearchforknowledge,and

unbearablepityforthesufferingofmankind.Thesepassions,like

greatwinds,haveblownmehitherandthither,inawaywardcourse,

overadeepoceanofanguish,reachingtotheveryvergeofdespair.

Ihavesoughtlove,first,becauseitbringsecstasyecstasyso

greatthatIwouldoftenhavesacrificedalltherestoflifefor

afewhoursofthisjoy.Ihavesoughtit,next,becauseitrelieves

loneliness----thatterriblelonelinessinwhichoneshivering

consciousnesslooksovertherimoftheworldintothecold

unfathomablelifelessabyss.Ihavesoughtit,finally,becausein

theunionofloveIhaveseen,inamysticminiature,theprefiguring

visionoftheheaventhatsaintsandpoetshaveimagined.Thisis

whatIsought,andthoughitmightseemtoogoodforhumanlife,

thisiswhat-atlast-Ihavefound.

WithequalpassionIhavesoughtknowledge.Ihavewishedto

understandtheheartsofmen.Ihavetriedtoapprehendthe

Pythagoreanpowerbywhichnumberholdsswayabovetheflu.Alittle

ofthis,butnotmuch,Ihaveachieved.

Loveandknowledge,sofarastheywerepossible,ledupwardtoward
