Advertisingisabigbusinessand,tomanypeople,afascinatingone,filledwithattractionandexcitement.Itispartliterature,partart,andpartshowbusiness.

Advertisingisthedifficultbusinessofbringinginformationtogreatnumbersofpeople.Thepurposeofanadvertisementistomakepeoplerespond-tomakethemreacttoanidea,suchashelpingtopreventforestfires,ortomakethemwanttobuyacertainproductorservice.

Atthebeginningofthe20thcentury,advertisingwasdescribedas“salesmanshipinprint”.Ifthisdefinitionwereexpandedtoincluderadioandtelevision,itwouldstillstandtoday.

Themosteffectivewaytosellsomethingisthroughperson-to-personcontact.Butthecostofperson-to-personsellingishigh.Becauseittakesagreatdealoftime,itincreasesthecostoftheproductorservice.Advertising,then,distributesthesellingmessagetomanypeopleatonetime.

ThefirstprintedadvertisementintheEnglishlanguageappearedin1478,morethanacenturybeforeShakespeare’sfirstplaywasproduced.ThisearlyadwastheworkofWilliamCaxton,England’sfirstprinter,whousedittoadvertisereligiousbooksfromhisownstudio.CaxtonpostedsmallprintednoticesalongLondon’smainstreets.Besidesadvertisinghisproduct,heidentifiedhisshopwithacertaintrademarksothatcustomerscouldfinditeasily.
