Business make technical change Why cloud is Important How to use the cloud Agenda What is Cloud Computing Today? Cloud services are consumer and business products, services and solutions delivered and consumed in real-time over the Internet Service Shared, standard service Built for a market (public) Extendibility Elastic scaling. Dynamic and fine grained Pricing Use-based pricing. Supported by service metering Standard UI technologies. Browsers or RIA clients User Interface System Interface Web services Other common Internet APIs Access Accessible via the Internet. Ubiquitous network access Portal Admin and provisioning; require some onboarding support Content A turnkey offering; integrates required resources Private Designed for, and access restricted to, a single enterprise (or extended enterprise) An internal shared resource, not a commercial offering IT Org is the “vendor” of the shared/std service to its users Public Designed for a market, not a single enterprise Open to a largely unrestricted universe of potential users Hybrid Enterprises cloud services portfolio includes both private and public cloud services Some specific services are delivered through a combination of public and private models (e.g., private cloud “bursting to” a public cloud service) Evolution of Cloud Deployment Why Should Businesses Be Planning for the Cloud Now? For Vendor Less than perfect reliability and/or security Cloud SLAs do not match customer expectations Individual preferences for local storage and control versus networked access and management Poor partnering choices For Customer Public cloud services not always suitable for GRC requirements, and private cloud projects often fail to demonstrate ROI if wrong metrics chosen Accessing cloud services and managing provider relationships may be complex, with some customers ill-equpped to deal with them Ongoing preference for enterprise owned assets, bolstered by attractive financial engineering from IT product vendors and service providers 2010 will be a important year of private clouds Continued concerns about cloud security, availability and performance Ongoing drive to maximize return on existing IT assets 2010 will be a big year for the announcement of private cloud offerings from virtually all major IT suppliers Clouds typically package infrastructure, platforms and applications together Private cloud announcements will drive many strategic partnerships, joint ventures and acquisitions/mergers. High Readiness Factor Low Leveraging the cloud: Starting Out User organizations evaluating when, where, how and why they should consider cloud computing services must first understand that cloud computing spans a wide range of IT-enabled capabilities, from low-level infrastructure to high-level business processes. Gather information on business solution requirements & technical requirements, & determine resource requirements. Planning Guidelines: 1. What business benefit are you looking to achieve by using a cloud-computing model? 2. What are the application characteristics and its demands for elasticity? 3. What set of cloud capabilities are required to achieve the objectives for which the solution is designed? 4. What does a risk analysis reveal? 5. Can you source the service from the Public Cloud or build a Private Cloud? 6. How will you manage the governance of the solution? 7. How will you design, develop, and test the solution? 8. What operational mechanisms are needed to support either public or pr
