14、the minds between the lovers.The course of true love never did run smooth. Shakespeare(真愛之旅從無坦途。)The word “course” originally refers to “the route followed by a ship or an aircraft”. In this saying, it is used metaphorically to mean the process of the development of love. This sentence indicates tha

15、t true love will not come along readily.2. 17、nell want to test John? She wants to be sure that John didn't love her just for her beauty.II. Background Information1. Grand Central Station: (often popularly called Grand Central Terminal) The monumental railway station was constructed in 1903-1913 by the New York and Harlem Railroad company.

18、It is a grand building which serves as a transportation hub connecting train, metro, car and pedestrian traffic in an efficient way. It has 67 train tracks on two different levels. These two levels are both below ground, with 41 tracks on the upper level and 26 on the lower.Grand Central Station is

However, could anyone imagine that there could be true love between a man and a woman who had never met? In this section, the author is going to

23、tell us a story about a love affair between an army officer and a young lady who took to each other first through correspondence and then after a severe test their mutual liking turned to true love.3. Love, mutual or one-sided, long or short, strong or tender, is usually blind. According to Shakespe

24、are, reason and love keep little company together. In that light, love at first sight is bound to last so long as love from both sides remains blind. 4. It takes time for true love to grow, just as a tree needs time to bear fruit. Without passage of time or exertion of effort, any form of love, incl

25、uding love at first sight, will stand no chance of eternity. 5. Love is born of beauty in the distance. As an old Chinese saying goes, distance produces beauty. A case in point is the popular poemYou live at the head of the Yangtze River while I live at its end; I miss you day and night without seei

26、ng you ever; but the truth is we drink water from the same river. 6. True love is based on the ups and downs of lovers in daily life. Deprived of such rises and falls in everyday life, lovers find no way to know, understand, and respect each other from all sides, thus making it impossible for both t

It is a short story, and its structural organization can be brought to light when we insert some questions between paragraphs. Generally sp

28、eaking, the story can be divided into nine parts. Part One (Para. 1) This part is the beginning of the story. The paragraph tells us about a tall young army officer, John Blandford, waiting to meet a woman at six o'clock. We learn something strange here. He had never actually seen her before, bu

29、t this woman had filled a special place in his life and her written words have given him strength.Part Two (Paras.2-3) Paragraph 2 tells us who the woman is and how she emerges in the young man's life. The woman is Hollis Meynell who writes him letters, wishing him safety and courage and giving

30、him her support during his military service. Paragraph 3 goes on to tell us more about the woman, which makes the relationship between the two clear. The woman's letter-writing goes on nonstop for 13 months. She even writes to him when not getting his letters of reply. During the difficult time

31、of war, her letters give him much courage to survive the war. Then gradually he believes that he loves her and she loves him. Fate has brought them together.Part Three (Para.4) This part tells us what had happened after they fell in love with each other. Naturally John wants to have a photo of the w

32、oman since they have never met each other before. Dramatically enough, the woman declines the request. Detailed reasons have been offered by the woman. The woman is seeking true love, not love because of beautiful looks or loneliness. She would rather leave the question of love undecided until they

33、meet each other in New York some time later.Part Four (Paras.5-7) This part describes the moment of their meeting. Only one minute to six, a young woman comes toward him. She is beautiful, just like springtime coming alive. Instinctively, he moves toward her. But the young woman is not wearing a ros

34、e, which was supposed to identify her.Part Five (Paras.8-9) In these two paragraphs we can find that the young woman asks him if he's going in her direction. John Blandford, instantly moves one step closer to her. Then he thinks he finds the woman he is waiting for-Hollis Meynell.Part Six ( Para

35、. 10) Paragraph 10 is a surprise to readers. The woman who is wearing the rose is not the beautiful woman. This comes as quite a shock! Instead, Hollis is apparently a woman well past forty, who looks like a fossil to him. She has patches of gray hair and legs that are so fat that they are shaking.

36、It is this older woman who is wearing the red rose.Part Seven (Para. 11) This part clears readers' doubts. The beautiful young girl vanishes out of sight. Blandford is then left with a serious choice. Should he give in to his desire and follow the young woman? After brief thought, he decides not

37、 to. He holds himself back, because he wants to meet Hollis, the woman whose spirit has brought him warmth. In her eyes, he even finds, under the older woman's appearance, warmth, gentleness and intelligence.Part Eight (Para. 12-13 ) Blandford successfully resists the urge to follow the younger

38、woman. He takes out the book which is to identify him to Hollis Meynell. He believes his relationship with Hollis will be something precious, something perhaps even less common than lovea friendship for which he has been, and would always be, thankful. He holds the book out toward the woman. That is

39、 the meeting between them.Part Nine (Para. 14) Paragraph 14 is really an unexpected ending for readers. John Blandford, as planned before, introduces himself and invites the woman to dinner. But the woman's reply is very surprising. Her answer makes it clear that she is not the woman that Blandf

40、ord has been waiting for. She was asked by the young woman who appeared before to wear a rose on her coat. The young woman is giving Blandford a test to see whether he is seeking true love, not appearance. The real Hollis, the beautiful young woman, is waiting for him in a restaurant. This is an une

41、xpected but happy ending of the storyThe beginning of the story:John Blandford, a tall young army officer, standing at a station, focused his eyesight on the exact time: six minutes to six. He was waiting for a woman never seen before, who had filled a special place in his life and whose written wor

42、ds had given him strength. (Para. 1)Possible questions: Who was that woman? How had she given him strength? What had happened between them?The woman was Hollis Meynell who wrote him letters wishing him safety and courage and giving him support. Before he went into battle, she read her letter to him

43、again and again (Para.2)For 13 months, she had written to him even when not getting his letters of reply. During war time, her letters gave him courage to survive. Gradually, he believed he loved her, and she loved him.(Para.3)Possible questions:Did they meet as planned?One minute to six, John Bland

44、ford saw a young woman coming toward him. She was beautiful, just like springtime coming alive. Instinctively he moved toward her, without noticing that she was not wearing a rose which was supposedly agreed between them before. 45、e?John Blandford asked her for a photo, but Hollis Meynell declined his request, saying that he could make his decision when they met in New York. (Para.4)Possible questions:Was the young woman the very one he had been waiting for so impatiently?Suddenly the young woman addressed him:“Going my way,

46、soldier?” uncontrollably, he made one step closer to her. Then he saw Hollis Meynell . (Para.8-9)Possible questions:How did the woman who addressed him look?Surprisingly, she was the woman standing behind the beautiful girl, a woman well past forty, just like a fossil to his young eyes, with patches

47、 of gray hair and with her thick legs shaking. But she was the woman who wore a red rose on her coat. (Para.10) Possible questions: What was John thinking then with the old lady before him ?With the young beautiful girl vanished, he was of two minds: his strong desire to follow the young woman and h

48、is deep longing to meet the woman whose spirit had truly brought warmth to him. Now here he found the woman he expected to meet was standing before him: Her face was gentle and intelligent and her gray eyes had a warm, kindly look. 49、 do?Blandford resisted the urge to follow the younger woman. He took out the book which was to identify him to Hollis Meynell. He believed it would be something precious, something perhaps even less common than love a friendship for which he had been, and would always be, thankful. He held the book

50、out toward the woman. (Para. 12-13)Possible questions: What did the old woman say ?Blandford was so glad that he invited the woman to dinner. The old woman told him that she didnt know what this was all about. She was wearing the rose out of the request from the young lady who just passed by. And th

51、e old woman said,“If you asked me to go out with you, I should tell you that shes waiting for you in that big restaurant near the highway. It was some kind of a test.” (Para. 14). Structured WritingA Paragraph of a Point of View Supported by ReasonsIn text A, the writer uses a common way to present

52、an opiniona point of view supported by reasons. The point of view might appear at the beginning of a paragraph and then reasons follow. However, sometimes the point of view appears at the end as a natural conclusion of the reasons. For example, in Paragraph 3 we have a point of view: He believes he

53、loves her, and she loves him. However, the point of view comes at the end of the paragraph as a natural conclusion. Before the end of the paragraph, the writer tells why they have fallen in love with each other. In paragraph 4, the point of view comes at the beginning: She declines his request for h

54、er photo. Then she explains the reasons.
