EUROPES DYNAMIC ENTREPRENEURSResearc

15、hers have completed, possibly for the first time, a pan-European investigation of entrepreneurs. IP Strategies, a Belgian consultancy, showed that the 800 fastest-growing entrepreneurs created more than 112,350 jobs an average of 140 jobs each at a time when most medium-sized companies were shedding

16、 labour.The typical entrepreneur displays surprising characteristics. The research shows that most of the companies were founded by experienced men and (a tiny 1 per cent of) women with an average of 10 years in business and an average age of 44. Many are trained professionals but all levels of educ

17、ational attainment are present half do not have a degree.Equally striking is the fact that more than half the entrepreneurs founded their companies with at least one business partner. This supports the findings of other research that teams are either a more creative force or that businesses with mor

18、e than one founder start with greater critical mass and therefore have a much bigger chance of surviving and thriving.As to the kinds of businesses that are growing rapidly, research shows there is almost no difference between the sectoral distribution. Thus, there is a large number of software comp

19、anies, computer systems integrators and other information and telecommunications companies, but overall the findings demonstrate there are no successful sectors but successful companies and teams.What may dismay researchers and policy makers who are hoping Europe will become a hotbed of the new tech

20、nologies is the age of the companies surveyed with over a quarter founded in the last century and the average age 17 years. What is also surprising is the small number of entrepreneurs who emerge from conglomerates.Unlike technology-based companies, which have to operate in global markets, many of t

21、he raped growers attributed their success to exploitation of the European market with more than three quarters of the exports to other EU countries.Only a very small number grew in existing markets with existing products. But half of these performed the high wire act of launching new products into n

22、ew export markets.With few exceptions the entrepreneurs attributed their growth rates not to their ability to compete on price but to their quality and service.The final point of interest that the survey throws up is the distribution in origin of the dynamically-growing companies between different c

23、ountries. The UK accounts for just under a third with Belgium and Spain each sharing another third equally between them. France, Germany and Italy come next in the league table with the same percentage of rapidly growing companies. There are few conclusions that can be drawn except that the distribu
