RobertSchuman(1886－1963)TheideasbehindtheEuropeanUnionwerefirstputforwardon9May1950byFrenchforeignministerRobertSchuman.Thisiswhy9MayiscelebratedasakeydatefortheEU.ThehistoryofEU1950—FrenchForeignMinisterRobertSchumanproposesintegratingthecoalandsteelindustriesofWesternEurope.1951—TheEuropeanCoalandSteelCommunity(ECSC)isestablished,withsixmembers:Belgium,WestGermany,Luxembourg,France,ItalyandtheNetherlands.Asupranationalbody,calledtheHighAuthority,iscreatedtomanagethecoalandsteelindustries.1957—ThesixmembersoftheECSCsigntheTreatiesofRome,creatingtheEuropeanEconomicCommunity(EEC)andtheEuropeanAtomicEnergyCommunity.TheEECmemberstatesaimtoremovetradebarriersbetweenthemandformacommonmarket.1967—TheinstitutionsofthethreeEuropeancommunitiesaremerged,creatingasinglecommission,asinglecouncilofministersandaEuropeanparliament.1979—ThefirstdirectelectionsfortheEuropeanparliamentareheld,allowingcitizenstovoteforcandidates.1993—TheTreatyofMaastrichtcreatestheEuropeanUnion,pavingthewayformonetaryunion.2002—Asinglecurrency,theeuro,replacesnationalcurrenciesin12ofthe15countriesoftheEU.2004—Initslargestexpansion,theEUwelcomes10newcountries,andanewconstitutionissigned.2005—ThemovetoratifytheconstitutionsufferssetbackswhenFranceandtheNetherlandsrejectthedocument.2007—BulgariaandRomaniajointheEU,expandingtheunionto27memberstates.2011—TheEuropeanUnionwontheNobelPeaceprize.2013.7.1—Croatiabecamethetwenty-eighthEUMember.Topromotepeace,thepursuitofcitizensrichlife,therealizationofsocialandeconom
