Tworelatedparadoxesalsoemergefromthesamebasicconception

oftheaestheticexperience.Thefirstwasgivenextendedconsiderationby

Hegel,whoarguedroughlyasfollows:oursensuousattentionandthat

givestotheworkofartitspeculiarindividuality.Becauseitaddressesitself

tooursensoryappreciation,theworkofartisessentiallyconcrete,tobe

understoodbyanactofperceptionratherthanbyaprocessofdiscursive

thought.

Atthesametime,ourunderstandingoftheworkofartisinpart

intellectual;weseekinitaconceptualcontent,whichitpresentstousin

theformofanidea.Onepurposeofcriticalinterpretationistoexpound

thisideaindiscursiveform-togivetheequivalentofthecontentofthe

workofartinanother,nonsensuousidiom.Butcriticismcanneversucceed

inthistask,for,byseparatingthecontentfromtheparticularfoi*m,it

abolishesitsindividuality.Thecontentpresentedthenceasestobethe

exactcontentofthatworkofart.Inlosingitsindividuality,thecontentloses

itsaestheticreality;itthusceasestobeareasonforattendingtothe

particularworkandthatfirstattractedourcriticalattention.ltcannotbe

thisthatwesawintheoriginalworkandthatexplaineditspoweroverus.

Forthiscontent,displayedinthediscursiveidiomofthecritical

intellect,isnomorethanahusk,adiscardedrelicofameaningthat

eludedusintheactofseizingit.Ifthecontentistobethetrueobjectof

aestheticinterest,itmustremainweddedtoitsindividuality:itcannotbe

detachedfromitssensuousembodimentwithoutbeingdetachedfrom

itself.Contentis,therefore,inseparablefromformandforminturn

inseparablefromcontent.(Itistheformthatitisonlybyvirtueofthe

contentthatitembodies.)

Hegel'sargumentisthearchetypeofmany,allaimedatshowingthat

itisbothnecessarytodistinguishformfromcontentandalsoimpossible

todoso.Thisparadoxmayberesolvedbyrejectingeitherofitspremises,

but,aswithKant'santinomy,neitherpremiseseemsdispensable.To

supposethatcontentandformareinseparableis,ineffect,todismissboth

ideasasillusoiy,sincenotwoworksofartcanthenshareeitheracontent

orafonn-thefoi*mbeingdefinitiveofeachwork'sindividuality.

Inthiscase,noonecouldeverjustifyhisinterestinaworkofartby

referencetoitsmeaning.Theintensityofaestheticinterestesapuzzling,

andultimatelyinexplicable,featureofourmentallife.If,ontheotherhand,

weinsistthatcontentandformareseparable,weshallneverbeableto

find,throughastudyofcontent,thereasonforattendingtotheparticular

workofartthatintriguesus.Everyworkofartstandsproxyforits

paraphrase.Animpassablegapthenopensbetweenaestheticexperience

anditsground,andtheclaimthataestheticexperienceisintrinsically

valuableisthrownindoubt.
