in

1947.AsuccessfulyoungbankerAndyfoundhiswifefornicatingwithabaseballcoach.Heflewintoafuryandplannedtoshootthemdeadatonenight.Butatlasthegaveup.Hisreasonwonhisemotion.Surprisingly,hiswifeandherloverdiedatthatnight.Andywasframedformurder.Andthesentencewastwolifeimprisonments.HewassentintoShawshankprison.

Thatwasadarkandgloomyhellwithmadprisoners,cruelwardersandviperousandgreedywardenry.ThefirstnightAndyspentinitanewcomerlikeAndycouldn’tbearthefearandkeptcryingandshouting.Theresultwashewastakenoutandbeatendeadbythewarders.Atthatmoment,AndyunderstoodthatifhewantstolivehemustbesilentinShawshank.

InShawshankAndyknewanoldprisonerRed.Theygraduallybecamefriends.Redwasabletogetsomesmallgoodsfortheprisoners.SoAndyaskedforalittlehammerbecauseofhisinterestingeology.

ThelifeinShawshankwasfullofdanger.Andy,asanewprisoner,wasoftenthreatenedandmaltreatedbysomescoundrelsbecausehealwaysrefusedtheirunbearableanddisgustingdemand.Insuchadarkprison,noonecouldhelphimevenifsomeonemaywantto.Aftertwoyears,oneday,Andy,Redandsomeotherprisonersgotthechancetorebuildtheroof.Theyheardtheheadofthewarderscomplainingthathehadtopayhightaxtogovernmentifhewantedtoreceivehisbrother’sinheritance.Andygrabbedtheopportunityandtaughthimawaytobeexemptfromtaxation.Theconditionwastogiveeachprisoner3bottlesoficebeer.Alltheprisonersenjoyedtherareandshortfreedomleisurely.Redsaid,"It’sjustlikerebuildingtheroofofourownhouse.WearefreelikeGod."AnotherconsequencewasthatfromthenonAndygottheprotectionfromtheheadofthewarders.AndallthewarderseventhewardenrybegantoconsultAndyforfinancialaffairs.Consequentlysomeofhisspecialbehaviorswerepermitted,suchaspastingpostersofsomefamousactressesonthewallorcarvingchessmenwithhislittlehammeratnight.

Prisonerashewas,Andydidmorethanacivilian.HekeptwritingonelettertothegovernmenteveryweektoaskforbankrolltodevelopthelibraryinShawshank.Afternearlytenyears,anewlibraryfinallyappeared.WhencheckingthebooksfromthegovernmentAndyfoundapieceofdiscofTheWeddingofFigaro.Thenheplayedthediscintheradioroom,lettingthedulcetmusicspreadaboveShawshank.Althoughhewasimprisonedalonefortwoweeksaspenalty,hewasn’tregretfulatall,becauseofthegreatestthingintheworld——music,whichrepresentsanotherbestthingforhuman——hope.InAndy’swords,hopeisagoodthing,maybethebestofthings,andnogoodthingeverdies.Lateron,AndymetanewprisonerTommy,fromwhomAndyknewwhowastherealmurdererthatkilledhiswife.Heimmediatelytoldthewardenryaboutthisandnaivelythoughtthewardenrywouldhelphimleavethere.Butthewardenrydidn’tdothat.HekilledTommy.Andyhadbeenlaunderingmoneyforthewardenryforalongtime.Soit’simpossibleforthewardenrytosetAndy,asatoolandanattesterforhiscrime,free.Atthismoment,everythingseemedtobeover.BothAndyandtheaudienceshoulddespair.

Buttheclimaxofthemovieappears.AtanightwiththunderstormAndyescapedfromShawshank.EveryoneincludingthewardenryandRedcouldn’tbelieveit.ThestonewallwhichRedassertedwouldn’tbedugthroughevenwithsixhundredyearswasdugthroughbyAndyintwodecades.Hekeptdiggingwiththatlittlehammeratnight,thesoundofwhichwasmistakenforthesoundofcarvingchessmen.Andtheholeonthewallwascoveredbyahugeposterofafamousactress.Atthatnight,Andycrawledthroughthenarrowtunneltoadrain-pipeandthensmasheditwithastoneunderthecoverofthunderclap.HewascrawlingwhilevomitinginthepipewhichwasaslongasfivefootballgroundsbyRed’sestimate.Atlength,Andygotoutofthepipeintoalittleriveroutsidetheprison.Hewalkedtothemiddleoftheriverandrippedhisshirt,lettingtherainwashallthefilthaway.Underthelightningandthunder,Andyspreadouthisarms,regainingfreedom.WhenreadingthepostcardfromAndy,Redsighed,"Somebirdsaren’tmeanttobecaged,that’sall.Theirfeathersarejusttoobright."

WhenIhadfinishedwatchingthemovie,Iwasexcitedandwantedtowatchitagain.Wheatherthefiguresanddetailsorthespiritthatthemusicconveyedto."Hopeisdangerous"Redhadeversaid,ButAndyhasalwaysstickedtoit.Hedidn’tcrywhenhewasthrownintoprisonthoughhewasinnocent.Oncontrary,hefoundwaystokilllongtimetoescape.Hehelpedtheheadoftheprisondotheillegalthingsinordertogainsomefreedom.Herebuiltalibraryandhelpedtheotherprisoners.Alltheprisonerslikedhim,forhehelpedthemfindhopeagain.Perhapsitwastimetoescape,inalighteningandthunderingnight,heescapedfromtheprisonthroughtheholehehaddugfortwentyyears.Hewasfreeeventually.

Thestorymaysoundsimple,butthetruthbehindthewordsisremarkable.WhenIheardthenameofthefilmfirsttime,IconsideredtheShawshanktobeaman’sname,butinfaceitisajail——ahellintheworld.Notonlyfortheinhumanityofthejailors——theybehavedbrutally;butalsoforthejailgnawedatpeople’heartbykeepingthemwaitingandwaitingaslifepassed.Itseemedthatonlythoseutterlyworthlesspeoplewhogaveupeverythingcouldsurvive.That’swherethestoryhappened.

ThepartimpressedmemostiswhenAndygotoutofthejai.Heextendedhisarmsinfrontofhimintheheavyrainasifhewerewelcomingthefreshairandthefreedom.Atthatmoment,Isawthefaithwinthedarkness,discharginglightdazzlingtheeyesinthedarkbluesky.Underthelight,Icouldfeelmyrecreantinnermostbeingshiveringashisvoicesaid:"Remember,hopeisagoodthing,maybethebestofthingsandnogoodthingeverdies."

ThereasonIlikethismovieisitencouragespeopletofighttopreservethedignityofhumanbeings,toappreciatethebeautyoflife,andthemostimportantistokeephopeforever.
