ThehungerandhumiliationthatIenduredasaconspicuouslypoorchild,evenbythestandardsofthepoverty-strickenmountains,taughtmetheimportanceofsuccess.Luckily,myparents,ignorantastheywere,knewthatthekeytrealsuccesswouldlieinmyeducation,andtheytoiledandmoiledyearinandyearouttoputthatkeyintomyhand,inaparentalspiritandtraditionthatprobablycanonlybefoundinChina.Watchingmyparentsworkingtheirbacksoffeveryday,Iacquiredthekindofdetermination,drive,andsenseofresponsibilitynotusuallyexpectedofChinesewomeninChina.Withmyparents’unswervingsupport,Istudieddiligentlyandoutperformedmostofmyclassmates.Foryears,myacademicreportcardwasthemainsourceofprideinmyfamily.

OnthestrengthofmyhighscoresintheNationalUniversityEntranceExaminations,IenteredI1986intotheBeijing-basedUniversityofInternationalBusinessandEconomy,oneofthenation’sleadinghigher-educationinstitutionsofitskind,tomajorinaccountinginitsDepartmentofInternationalBusinessManagement.Broughtupinanisolatedcommunity,Iwasconvincedthatmycountry,justasmyfamily,couldonlyachieverealandsustainedprosperitybyreadilydoingbusinesswiththeoutsideworld.MaskingfulluseofeveryminuteIhad,Ireadavarietyofbooksandjournalsrelatedtomymajor,throughwhichIbroadenedmyvisionandenrichedmyknowledge.Myprofessionalinterestswerefocusedmostlyonaccounting,finance,andinternationaltrade.Asyoucanseefromthetranscripts,myundergraduateacademicrecordwasexcellent,rankingmeamongthetopthreeamongthe140studentsofmydepartment.Inrecognitionofmyperformance,theuniversityawardedmeastreamofscholarshipsandprizes.

Whilemygradesareoutstanding,Iammoredistinguishedbymypublications,whichdemonstrateaninsistentquestforrealsolutionstorealproblems.TheInternationalBusiness,awidely-readbusinessjournalinChina,publishedanumberofmyarticles.TheseincludeReasonsoftheAmericanTradeDeficitwithChina(Sept.1,1987),ExplorationoftheStock-holdingSystemEmployedbytheBigandMedium-sizedState-ownedEnterprises(Mar.29,1988),andProspectsoftheInternationalShippingIndustry(May5,1988).In1990,IworkedasacoeditortotheDictionaryofContemporaryAccountingandFinancialManagement,whichhassincebecomeamajorprofessionalreferencebooktomanyChineseentrepreneurs,accountants,auditorsandotherprofessionalsinthebusinesscommunity.Myeditingconcentratedonsixsections,Accounting,Auditing,FinancialManagement,InternationalFinance,Internationaltaxation,BondsandRealEstates.

MysolideducationpaidoffinmyabilitytotakeonavarietyofresponsibilitiesinChina’sboomingeconomy.AfterIobtainedmyBachelor’sDegreeinEconomicsin1990,IfirsttookupthejobofanassistanttothefundingmanagerattheChinaNationalTechnicalImport&ExportCorporation,whereIgraduallydevelopedintoanexperiencedaccountingprofessional.Uponameticulousanalysisofthecompany’sfinancialstatements,reportsandotherrecords,Ifounditsfinancingpolicyskewed.ItwasborrowingbillionsofRMBwithhighinterestrateswhilemaintaininglargebankdepositsatlowinterestrates.Togetherwithmysupervisor,Irewrotethefinancingpolicy,savingthecorporationapproximatelythirtymillionyuan.Tomaximizefinancingefficiency,Ialsodevelopedaninternalbankingsystemthat,bycloselytrackingtheactualfundingsupplyanddemandsofdifferentdepartmentsandprojects,madefulluseofthecorporation’financialresources.Forthis,Ireceivedspecialcommendationfromthepresidentofthecorporation.

Since1993,IhavebeenmeetingincreasinglygreaterchallengesattheChinaKingdomImport&ExportCorporation,acompanythatIhelpedtosetup.Asheadofthecompany’sFinancialandAccountingDivision,Iformulateditsaccountingrulesandpolicies,internalcontrolmechanism,financingplans,contract-controlsystems,andmanyothercrucialpolicies.Bymeticulousbudgetingandaccounting,mydivisionplayedaveryimportantroleinthecorporation’srapidgrowth,whichreachedanannualtotalofsalesofUS$30,000,000in1997.Thisimpressivetrackrecordnowgivesitastrongcompetitiveedgeoverothers.ItenjoysanAcreditratingbytheChinaMerchantsBank,andhasbeendesignatedanhonorimporterbytheSea-foodAssociation.

Havingbeeninbusinessforeightyears,IfeelthatIhavenottakenfulladvantagesofmypotential,allmyachievementsnotwithstanding.Ihavepracticedmyprofessionalexpertiseinaccounting,demonstratedmyleadershipabilitiesandperfectedmycommunicationskills.ButIhaveyettobecomeanentrepreneurinmyownright,andtofullymastertheartofmodernbusiness.Iwanttobetrainedmorevigorouslyinscientificmethodsofanalysisandsynthesis.AsChina’sembraceofmarketeconomygetsconsolidated,itcreatesalotofopportunitiesandchallengesthatIdonotyetfeelfullyconfidenttoseize.Ineedtounderstandbetterhowafull-blownmarketeconomylikethatoftheUnitedStatesreallyworks.Iamsurethat,inmanyrespects,China’sdevelopmentinthecomingdecadeswillmirrortheAmericanexperienceinthepast.MybusinesscareerhassofarbenefitedmostlythecompaniesthatIworkedfor,butagoodbusinesseducationinAmericawillprobablyspellthebe
