At that time, all family members eat dinner together. The

Dishes such as chicke n, fish and bea n curd cannot be excluded, for in Chin ese, their pronun ciati on s, respectively ji, yu and doufu, mean auspiciousness,abundance and richness. After the dinner, the wholefamily will sit together,chatting and watching TV. In re
16、cent years, theSpring Festival party broadcast on Chi na Cen tral Televisi on Stati on (CCTV) is essential entertainmentfor the Chinese both at home and abroad.According to custom, each family will stay up to see the New Year in.Waking up on New Year, everybody dresses up. First they extend greet in
17、gs to their pare nts. The n each child will get money as a New Year gift, wrapped up in red paper. People in no rther n China will eat jiaozi, or dumpli ngs, for breakfast, as they thi nk jiaozi i n sound means biddi ng farewell to the old and ushering in the new. Also, the shape of the dumpli ng is

So people eat them and wish for money and t r e a s u reSouthern Chinese eat niangao (New Year cake made of glutinous rice flour) on this occasi on, because as a homoph one, nian gao means higher and higher, one year after another. 19、pring Festival are a good time for relatives, friends, and classmates as well as colleagues to excha ngegreet in gs, gifts and chat leisurely.Burning fireworks was once the most typical custom on the Spring Festival.
