1、Teaching English by Connecting Daily Life By Liao XiaohuiAs English teachers in junior middle schools, all of our students are teenagers, whose knowledge and interests are limited, and it is hard for them to concentrate on the things that they are not familiar with too long. And how to find a more e

2、ffective way to teach them English is one of our problems. I think teaching English by connecting the students daily life may be a good one. Lets take the Unit 11- What time do you go to school as an example. The topic of this unit is learning to talk about daily life routines and ask about and say c

3、lock time, which is very close to the students everyday life. Each of them may have got something to talk about. As English teachers, we can use some normal additional materials to help: calendars, clocks with movable hands, schedule timetables, and so on. The conversations can also be focused on th

We can begin with a question like, What time do you usually get up/ go to school/ have English/ do sports/ have dinner /.?, meanwhile, this promotes the students to learn to sa

6、n English, for the ways of saying time are not exactly the same in the two languages. We can teach this step by step. First, the easiest, we say clock time in the way of “hour + minute. This is quite the same as we say in Chinese. To do this, we must know the numbers from 1 to 60, and if necessary,

7、we can give the students a little time to review them. But this is not enough, for the differences are more difficult, and we can make a list of them, these items may be included: oclock, half past, quarter, and so on. Its quite important to make sure that most of the students understand and know how

8、 to use them. To do this, we need much practice, both in oral and written. Now we can use the clock faces with movable hands. Of course, we can use the computer to offer the students clock times randomly by making some software, and that may be more funny. Thus, we can begin our conversations! Worki

9、ng in pairs or groups can give the students the most chances to practice widely, and it can be used more often, but we need to walk around the classroom to check their work and prevent the class from being a mess. It is useful and necessary to ask several pairs or groups to act out or give some repo

Meanwhile, to make surveys about the students daily activities is also a good way to practice asking and answering time for them, they can practice a lot in inquiring and answering. To improve the students reading abilities, we can use the article in Page 67-3a,

11、 and offer some more questions for the students to answer according to it. Besides, we can search more materials from the Internet, such as articles about some busy famous pop singers or movie stars, for the students to read and find out the answers of the questions from them. For the teenagers, thi

12、ngs about pop stars probably attract more interesting and attention and they can make our classes more attractive.People express time in different ways in English and Chinese, as English teachers, we must realize that the biggest challenge for the students of this unit in listening is how to underst

We can organize some competitions in listening, for example, we can play a recording and see who can find the right time first. D

14、o tell the students it is a good habit to make plans to arrange their daily life by making time schedules. This will help them to remind every important thing to do, instead of forgetting any of them, as we know, this will help us to keep our promises if you promise to do something at some time. And it is also good for health to do everyday things regularly, which means, we should do our daily activities at certain times. If we always get up, do morning exercises, have meals and go to bed according to a certain timetable, our bodies will form habits to it, and get ready for the act
