10、號上充當(dāng)水手，航行于南太平洋一帶。他后來的杰作白鯨取材于這次海上生活。1842年7月離船，曾為南太平洋馬克薩斯群島有食人生番之稱的泰皮族所俘虜。脫逃后于當(dāng)年8月在一條澳大利亞商船上作水手，因違犯紀(jì)律，被囚在塔希提島。越獄后在當(dāng)?shù)馗鲘u漫游，所聞所見后來寫進(jìn)他的歐穆一書中。11月，他到一艘捕鯨船上做投叉手。 1843年8月又在一艘軍艦上做水手，1844年10月在波士頓退伍。后開始寫作。 梅爾維爾最初的兩本書泰皮(1846)和歐穆(1847)，是根據(jù)他在泰皮和塔希提的見聞經(jīng)過藝術(shù)加工而寫成的游記。1847年梅爾維爾開始創(chuàng)作瑪?shù)?，并同紐約文藝界接觸，經(jīng)常為文藝刊物寫稿。1849年梅爾維爾出版雷得本，
