I did everything I could to chase (追趕) him away. But Stray Dog kept ing back.Of course, Mattie did everything she could to make sure
17、 of that. She talked to him, played with him, and fed him.He followed her like a shadow (影子).I had a kind heart, but I had no interest in dogs, especially stray ones. But when winter came, something happened that changed my mind. One cold day, Dad set off to go ice fishing. Id have gone with him, bu

Mattie had asked to go, but Dad said no. “You wont stand the cold,” he said. “I want to do some serious fishing.”Dad came home a few hours later. “Got me some fine ones,” he shouted. “ e see!”Ma came from upstairs where she was painting a bedroom. Then I fell and hurt my foot so I couldnt walk. Pretty Dog stayed with me.” I dont remember which one of us
24、 started calling him Brave Dog, but that was his name from then on. He became as much a member of the family as any of us were.1.
