I'mmostproudofthelargenumberofChinesestudentsbeingeducatedinourcountry—nowabout18000.Iteachsomeofthemandseethebenefitsthatcomefromthisexchange.Atthesametime,wearelearningvaluablelessonsfromyou.Nonetheless,problemsremaininoureconomic,educationalandstrategicrelations.

AsaprivateAmericancitizenIrecognizethatmanyoftheburdensandopportunitiesofourrelationshiphavenowpassedtothenon-governmentalsectorsofourtwosocieties:toindividuals,ourcorporations,universities,researchinstitutes,foundations,andsoon.ThereisnodoubtthatSino-Americanrelationshavereachedanewstage.Inthiscontext,itisimportantforourtwosocietiestosearchforareasofcooperationwhichclearlyaddtoourmutualbenefit.
