Wehavecompiledquestionsformanagementteamsaheadofthesummerconferencecircuit,whichrampsupthisweekandcontinuesthroughtheUPSInvestorDayinearlyJune.RailroadM&Ahasstayedintheheadlines,butweremainrestrictedandarefocusedelsewherethisconferenceseason.Specifically,weexpectamorefrequentdebateoverwhenthetruckloadratecyclehitsapeak.Severalmanagementteamshavealreadyweighedinandforecastedthatspotrateswillstayabovecontractfortherestoftheyear.Justaboutanythingseemspossibleinthisfreightmarket,butinourviewrunningspot>contractfor~17monthsstraightwouldrequireamaterialamountofannualRFPsshiftingtoshorterterms.Contractstypicallyreseteachyear,whichistheprimaryreasonspotrateshistoricallystayabovecontractforonly12-13monthsduringtightfreightmarkets.Weoutlinedthe“strongerforlonger”versus“it’snotdifferentthistime”debateinourrecent1Q21review(detailshere)alongwiththelatesttrendsinChaseCarddata,whichhasshiftedabittowardservicesanddiscretionaryspending.RecentimprovementsinWestCoastportfluiditywillalsoaddcapacityandfactorintothepeakratedebate.Autonomoustruckshavegainedmoreattentionrecently,whichwillfactorintoQ&Awith“conventional”freightmanagementteamsbutarenotlikelytobeafocalpointofanypresentation.ESGwillremainanincreasinglycommonthemeanddiscussiontopic,especiallyifitcanbetiedtotruckloadconversionorotherendmarketopportunities.Includedinthisnotearespecificquestionscategorizedbytopicandbroadthemesrelevantforeachofthegroupsintransports;seepagetwoforalistofcoveredcompanies.
