Butthemarketgeneratesinterestfarbeyonditssizebecause

itbringstogethergreatwealth,enormousegos,greed,passion

andcontroversyinawaymatchedbyfewotherindustries.

IntheweeksandmonthsthatfollowedMrHirst'ssale,spending

ofanysortbecamedeeplyunfashionable.Intheartworldthat

meantcollectorsstayedawayfromgalleriesandsalerooms.

Salesofcontemporaryartfellbytwo-thirds,andinthemost

overheatedsector,theyweredownbynearly90%intheyearto

November2022.Withinweekstheworld'stwobiggestauction

houses,Sotheby,sandChristie,s,hadtopayoutnearly$200m

inguaranteestoclientswhohadplacedworksforsalewiththem.

Thecurrentdownturnintheartmarketistheworstsincethe
