labor-intensivemanufacturing,thesamefearswereexpressedaboutlabor-
savingtechnologyinthefactory.Farmemploymentintheindustrialcountries
hasdwindledtonearlynothing:manufacturingemploymentinAmericanow
standsatamere15%ofthelabor-force.Butotherjobshavetakentheirplace.
Asaresult,thesechangeshavehappenedalongside-indeed,theyhavebeen
partandparcelof-anextraordinarilyrapid,persistentandwidelyshared
improvementinlivingstandards.
Yetitdoesnotsufficetorefuteelementaryfallacies.Sophisticatedalarmists

carefully,theircasegoesasfollows.Thebreadthandintensityofthird-world
competitionisincreasing.Thepressureisconcentratedonparticularpartsof
theeconomy-forthemoment,onlow-skillmanufacturing.Wagesthereare
beingforceddownandjobslost.Thischangewillaccelerate.Modem
societies(withweaktiesoffamilyandreligion)arenolongerequippedto
