14、tionsArticulationis one of the most important analytical concepts used by manygmpractitioners of cultural studies when they attempt to contextualize the practices of everyday life. As a methodological stance, it is an attempt to mediate between essentialism and radical anti-essentialism. Essentialis
15、m tends to view the origin of something as already defining its possibilities; anti-essentialism sees all relationships as a contingent effect of power. In its more extreme forms, anti-essentialism can devolve into relativism. Cultural Studies negotiates the theoretical paradigms on the right and th
16、e left by attempting to avoid the extremes of universalist and relativist paradigms of understanding. As a mediation between these two positions, the concept of articulation attempts to show the contingent historical relationships, the interconnections among disparate things, that create specific ma
17、terial effects. There are two different answers to your question: social conflict in general remains a very hot topic in academia, in the humanities, the social sciences, and schools of
20、 media and information technology. People in the U.S. are particularly interested in issues of gender and race, and this fact has infused a lot of scholarship, if not a corresponding of popular interest (as in the mainstream media).However, class stratification remains underrepresented in both schol
21、arship and mainstream discourses. Concern for class is far more evident in the British academy than in the U.S., where many people buy into the idea that all of America is middle class, and that the main social problem is one of racial inequality. This in part has to do with the failures of the poli
22、tical Left in the U.S. in the post-Vietnam war era. Since the ascendance of the New Right and Regan, we have been living in a long era of social conservatism, which has privileged the wealthy and exacerbated class differences. But there is very little recognition of that fact-even though our economy
23、 is now in dire straits. In Britain, there is a far longer history of the left, of the Labour Part, and of British Marxism as an academic field, and therefore much more class consciousness.There are, however, American sociologists like Sherry Ortner and humanists like my colleague Nadine Hubbs, who
24、are currently working on class, especially the white working class. I know from talking with Nadine that there are a few good books out there about class identity, the way that class functions in culture, but there is not anything like what is available regarding gender or race issues.
