NoonecanhavefailedtonoticethefactthatWesternfestivalsgainever-increasingpopularityinChina.AnincreasingnumberofChinesearefondofcelebratingWesternfestivalstoday.OnValentine’sDay,manypeople,especiallytheyoung,giveflowersorchocolatetotheonetheylove;whenChristmasapproaches,nearlyeverystoreputondecorationslikeSantaClaus,snowflakesandevenChristmastrees,nottomentionthemillionsofpeopleimmersedinthethrillingatmosphereoffestivalonChristmasEve;evensuchholidaysasHalloweenandtheEasterDayarebecomingknownandcelebratedbymoreandmoreChinese.Incomparison,suchtraditionalChinesefestivalsastheSpringFestival,theFestivalofLanternsandtheMid-AutumnDayseemtobelosingtheirattraction.

Inviewofsuchasituation,manyareworriedthatChineseculturewillbeignoredorevenruinedbytheinvasionofWesternfestivals.Personally,Ibelievethatweneedn’tbeoverworried.Actually,theincreasingpopularityofsomeWesternfestivalsinChinaisnothingaccidental,butsomethingjustifiable.

First,itisapartofculturalglobalization.Withthedevelopmentofcommunicationscienceandtechnologyandalongwithmoreandmorenationsopeninguptotheoutsideworld,theworldtodayhasturnedintoaglobalvillage,withmanynationalthingsbecominginternational.Chinaisnoexception.Whileweareabsorbingadvancedscienceandtechnologyfromforeigncountries,wearealsotakingindifferentcultures.

Secondly,itisasignofChina’srejuvenating.Asanationboastingacivilizationof5,000years,Chinesehavebeenknownfortheirspiritofaccommodationoropen-mindedness.ChinausedtobeameltingpotofculturesastheU.S.istoday.IntheprosperousTangdynasty,Chinawashosttotravelersandsettlersfromovertheworld.Actually,beingaccommodatingisasignofanythrivingnation.Therefore,weshouldbepleasedratherthanupsettoseeChinesepeopleembracingforeignfestivals.

ItistruethatsometraditionalChinesefestivalsarelosingtheirappealtomanypeople,butthisdoesnotnecessarilytheruinofChineseculture.Actually,acloserinspectionrevealsthatmostChinesecelebrateWesternfestivalsmerelyoutofthewishtoseeknovelty,tofindanewwaytoentertainthemselvesortoexpresstheiridentityinthefaceoftheoldergeneration.Ontheotherhand,mostChinesehavenotignoredtheirnativefestivals.AconvincingproofisthattheSpringFestivalstillseesthelargestflowofpopulationintheworldasmostChineserushtotheirhomesforfamilyreunion.

Inaword,whilewearegivingprioritytothepreservationanddevelopmentoftraditionalChineseculture,weneed’tworrytoomuchabouttheinflowofforeignculture.Somepeopleclaimthat,intheageoftelevision,readingbooksisnotasimportantasitoncewasandthatpeoplecanlearnasmuchbywatchingtelevisionastheycanbyreadingbooks.Doyouagreeordisagreewiththisstatement?Writeanessayofabout400words.

Admittedly,televisiongivesusanoptiontotraditionaleducationthroughreadingandclassroomteaching.Indeedthevividimagesitproducessucceedintheeducationofchildren,whoaremuchmoreinclinedtoacceptvisualinformationthanabstractlettersorcharacters.Televisionalsoraisesourconsciousnessbyprovidingthelatestnewsanddiscoveries,extendingourhorizonbysuchdocumentaryprogramsas"NationalGeographic"and"Discovery",whosecontentsmightotherwisebeunapproachableinanentirelifetime.

Despitealltheseadvantages,theshortcomingsoftelevisionsareequally,ifnotmore,apparent.Televisionstationsoperateasprofitenterprises.Consequently,televisionprogramsareprofit-based,andtheircommercialorientationdrivesthemtobeentertainingmoresothaneducational,forthelatteraretypicallylessprofitable.

Furthermore,watchingtelevisioncanneitherprovokeabstractthinking,whichismostcrucialinadvancedscientificresearch,norcanitteacheffectivemanagementandadequatecontrolofwrittenlanguage.Writtenlanguagecarriestheutmostimportanceininheritanceanddisseminationofknowledge.Bookscontainthecollectivehumanexperience,knowledgeandwisdom.Humantalentsofabstractthought,logicaldialogue,philosophyandwritingstylecanbeacquiredonlythroughthereading,digesting,andruminationofnovels,texts,essaysandspeeches.Shallow,short-sighted,entertainmentprogramsoffernosuchenrichment.

Inaddition,watchingtelevisiontendstooveremphasizemachinery,ignoringhumanity.Openanancientbookandreadthecommentsbythoselivingcenturiesago,thousandsofmilesaway.Thebookitselfconnectsreadersandwritersacrosstimeandspace,givingonethesenseofbelongingtoonelargehumanfamily.Lyingonsofawatchingtelevisionwithpopcorninhandcanonlycauseisolation,alienationanddepression.

Inthefirstplace,schooluniformhelpsstudentsfosterteamspiritandstrengthenthespiritofcooperation.Providingasenseofunity,theuniformmakeseveryonefeelthatheorsheisinfluentialandindispensableintheteam.Regardlessofperformanceinclassorexamination,onestudentiswearingthesameclothesastheothersandworkingonhissharefortheteamresponsibility.Naturallytheywillbewillingtoparticipateintheteamandproudoftheircontributions.Broughtupinthiscaringandinclusiveenvironment,studentswillhaveaneasytimefunctioninginnewcommunityandcollaboratingwithcoworkers.

Onthewhole,studentswillbenefitagreatdealfromtheiruniformsforthereasonsrangingfromtheirpersonalitycultivationtoaidsinfaceofdanger.Consideringallabovefactors,itbearsnoreasoningtoabandonschooluniform.WhyDoIAttendUniversity?Everysummerhundredsofthousandsofyoungstudentsattendthecollegeentranceexamination,fightinghardtobeamongtheluckyonestoenteruniversities.Buthavethislargecrowdaskedthemselvessuchaquestion:whydoyouwanttogotouniversity?Itisdangerousifsomanypeopletrysohardtodosomethingwithoutclearpurposes.Forme,goingtouniversitycanfulfillthreeimportantpurposes.Themostdirectmotiveforgoingtouniversityistosecureagoodjobinthefuture.Withthelargestpopulationintheworld,Chinaiscertainlytobeagatheringplaceoflaborforce.Whenthereismorethanenoughlaborforce,onehastobeextraordinaryinordertosucceedinthejobmarket.Asnotallyoungpeoplecangotouniversitynow,aneducationexperienceinuniversityissuretoguaranteesomeadvantages.Ifyouopenaclassifiedadvertisement,youmayfindthatmostofthewell-payingjobsrequireauniversitydegreeorhigher.Therefore,withoutuniversityeducation,Icannotpossiblyfindadecentjobtosupportmyselfandmyfamily.Besidesgoodjobandincome,amoreimportantmotiveforgoingtouniversityistoacquireknowledge.SincehighschoolIhavebecomeincreasinglyinterestedinlearningknowledge.Iwasusuallyfascinatedbywhatteacherstaughtinvariousclasses,andthiscuriositydrivesmetoknowmore.Ihavefoundthatthingstaughtinhighschoolarejustonverybasiclevel.IfIwanttodigdeeper,thebestplaceishereatuniversity.Withthehelpofprofessorsandbooks,Icanlearntheknowledgemorethoroughlyandsystematically.Iwon'tbesatisfiedwithmylifeunlessIcansatisfymycuriosityforknowledgeinuniversity.Themostprofoundmotiveforgoingtouniversi
