9、t B In the fifteenth century Italy had no single ruler. Instead it was a collection of independent states, knows as “city states” because each one was run by a central city such as Florence. Some were small; some were large. Most states had their own governments, laws and money. During the Middle Ag

10、es, five city states became very rich and powerful. For example, Venice became rich from its trade with the Far East, the Mediterranean and the rest of Europe. Banks in Florence lent money to business and governments all over Europe. There was great competition between the city states which led to r

11、egular wars and between the families which ruled them. The city states also competed with each other to build the grandest or tallest buildings. Let's look in detail at one city Florence. In 1400 Florence was one of the largest cities in Italy. It was the centre of a rich trade in wool and cloth

12、. One-third of the workers in Florence worked in the wool trade. The most powerful family in Florence was the Medici who ruled the city between 1469 and 1492. The other powerful people who had influence in Florence were the members of the guilds(行業(yè)協(xié)會). Craftsmen such as carpenters each had their own

13、 guild. If you were a member of a guild and over 25 years old then you could be involved in governing the city. The rulers of Florence wanted their city to be impressive and famous. The Medici collected books and built a huge library to house them. They spent money on renovating old buildings to be

Reducing the amount of waste that goes into landfills is one reason why cities and states are passing food-waste recycling laws. “Our landfills are far from enough for the creation of

21、new ones which is shrinking.” Renee Crowley, a project manager at the Lower East Side Ecology Center in New York City, told TFK. Officials in Seattle, Washington, say that food waste makes up 30% of the trash going into landfills, and they are looking to reduce that percentage. That city has a law r

22、equiring people to recycle food waste. It is banned from all garbage. There is a fine for people who put it into regular garbage. Crowley points out that even in cities where food recycling is not a law, there are often places where citizens can drop off their food waste for composting. Many schools

23、 and colleges have also started composting programs. Those who are against food-recycling laws say that composting process is costly. In addition, it can be difficult for people who live in apartments to store their waste because they don't have access to outside storage bins. Patti Ferguson fro
