adetailedanalysisofalargesocialnetworkof12,067peoplewhowerebeen

closelyfollowedfor32years,from1971to2003.

Theinvestigatorsknewwhowerefriendswithwhomaswellaswhowasa

spouseorsiblingorneighbor,andtheyknewhowmucheachpersonweighed

atvarioustimesoverthreedecades.Thatletthemreconstructwhathappened

overtheyearsasindividualsbecameobese.Didtheirfriendsalsobecome

obese?Didfamilymembers?Orneighbors?

Theanswer,theresearchersreport,wasthatpeopleweremostlikelyto

becomeobesewhenafriendbecameobese.Thatincreasedaperson*schances

ofbecomingobeseby57percent.Therewasnoeffectwhenaneighborgained

orlostweight,however,andfamilymembershadlessinfluencethanfriends.

Itdidnotevenmatterifthefriendwashundredsofmilesaway,theinfluence

remained.Andthegreatestinfluenceofallwasbetweenclosemutualfriends.
