theInnocenceProject.Mostoftheirclientsarepoormen,manyfromracial
andethnicminorities.Infact,studieshaveshownthatU.S.judgesandjuries
areofteninfluencedbyracialandethnicbackground,andthatpeoplefrom
minoritygroupsaremorelikelytobeconvicted.Someofthesemenhadbeen
sentencedtodeath,aformofpunishmentusedinthirtyeightstatesoutof
fifty(asof2006).Formostoftheseprisoners,theironlyhopewasanother
trialinwhichDNAtestingcouldbeusedtoprovetheirinnocence.
Between1992and2006,theInnocenceProjecthelpedfree100men.Some
oftheseprisonershadbeeninjailforten,twentyyearsormoreforcrimes
theydidnotcommit.However,thegoaloftheInnocenceProjectisnotsimply
tosetfreethosewhoarewrongfullyinjail.Theyalsohopetobringabout
realchangesinthecriminaljusticesystem.
Illinoisinthelate1990s,agroupofjournalismstudentsatNorthwestern
Universitywereabletobringaboutsuchachangeinthatstate.Theybegan
investigatingsomeIllinoisprisonerswhoclaimedtobeinnocent.Through
DNAtesting,thestudentswereabletoprovethatinfacttheprisonerswere
notguiltyofthecrimestheyhadbeenaccusedof.Thirteenofthesemenwere
setflee,andin2000,GovernorRyanofIllinoisdecidedtostopcarrying
outdeathsentencesuntilfurtherstudycouldbemadeoftheprisoners1cases.
TheuseofDNAincriminalcasesisstillbeingdebatedaroundtheworld.
Somefearthatgovernmentswillonedaykeeprecordsofeveryone1sDNA,which
couldputlimitsontheprivacyandfreedomofcitizens.Otherpeoplemistrust
thescienceofDNAtestingandthinkthatlawyersuseittogettheirclients
